    R.I.P. Gary
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rafa Benítez pays tribute to Gary Ablett

Yesterday was a very sad day for everyone who knew Gary Ablett. When I first interviewed him for the post of Reserve Team Coach, I could tell from a report that he had written that he was a dedicated, hard-working professional, and that he loved his work helping young lads to improve. But what struck me most was his character - you could see straightaway that he was a good human being.

His attitude towards what we were trying to achieve on a day to day basis was always excellent, and when he was with the players, Reserves as well as First Team players at Liverpool, he was always willing to listen, with a positive approach to help them to get better.

Together with my staff I would like to send our condolences to all his family and friends. Rest in Peace.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Mersyside's footballing community united this afternoon to celebrate the life of Gary Ablett.

The former Liverpool and Everton defender's funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners at the city's Anglican Cathedral, showing the esteem in which he was held by both Reds and Blues.

Sadness: Gary Ablett's son Fraser helps carry the former Liverpool and Everton defender's coffin

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was joined by Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, along with several of his former team-mates including Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson and John Barnes.

A moving service, which lasted for more than an hour and started with his coffin being brought in to 'You'll Never Walk Alone and leave to Everton's club anthem 'Z-Cars', also included a huge presence from Goodison Park.

Everton captain Phil Neville, midfielder Tim Cahill and former forward Duncan Ferguson attended the memorial service

Among them were David Moyes, current players Phil Neville and Tim Cahill, plus a number of Ablett's old colleagues Duncan Ferguson, Matt Jackson and David Unsworth.

Former Everton managers Joe Royle and Howard Kendall also paid their respects at Liverpool Cathedra

Jackson, who gave one of the readings, described Ablett as 'a fantastic family man, great team-mate and a true friend.'

Roy Keane, who worked alongside Ablett at Ipswich Town, was also at the service

Everton captain Phil Neville was among a host of football stars of past and present who attended the memorial service and later tweeted: 'Sad sad day RIP Gary Ablett.'

Ex-Anfield boss Rafa Benitez was joined by Kop legends Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler to pay their respects to Ablett

Club-mate Tim Cahill echoed Neville's sentiments on the social networking site, posting: 'Rest in peace to a legend Gary Ablett. An emotional funeral and also amazing turnout for such a great person.'

Gary Ablett's wife Jacqueline arrives at the memorial service for her late husband who lost his tragic battle with a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Also in the congregation were England Under-21 head coach Stuart Pearce, England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence, Howard Wilkinson, Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers and Roy Keane, who gave Ablett his last job in August 2010 at Ipswich, shortly before he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Everton manager David Moyes and Team GB Olympics boss Stuart Pearce were also in the congregation

The only man to win the FA Cup with Liverpool and Everton, Ablett lost his 16-month battle with the illness at the beginning of the year.

He leaves behind his wife Jacqueline and five children, Scarlett, Reece, Riley, Josh and Fraser.

Without making light of the situation, Howard Kendall looks very well. He's aging really slowly
