    Freebies

Both Cole and Jovanovic were class last night.

Will we see some more freebies coming in? There was an interesting quote from Roy last night with regard to transfers and fees, "Its not how much the player costs, its how good the players is"

Think Jovanovic was great last night. He will run Kuyt close for the "never give up" tag. Him on the left, Kuyt on the right could be very effective. SG had a bit of a love-in w/ Cole but think the latter is saving himself for Torres' advances

Perhaps...but its not always a god given that £££££'s equate to good football? Hopefully Citeh will bear this fact out.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

According to a recent statistical study, 92% of the difference in league position between football teams is explained by wages rather than managers or transfer fees or anything else.

Wages is an efficient market apparently and so the best players get the best money or move around.

Whereas all sorts of mistakes and shrewdness go on with transfer fees, and there are areas where players represent very bad value eg bought after an international championship, or oddly enough according to the report, if they're blonde (scouts tend to pick them out more because they're more noticeable).

The report would suggest that we'd be better spending money on wages to keep our best players than we would on big money transfers that are very hit and miss. So freebies like Cole and Jova fit nicely into that strategy.

If only every player was free, and all we did was a draft every season like in american football. Surly it would make for a much more interesting season aswell

fraid not, it was in a book i have called Why England Lose & Other Curious Football Phenomena Explained (catchy title huh!) by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski.

There is a chapter in there all about the transfer market, which contains what may be one of my favourite quotes of all time.

Talking about how foreign players fail to settle and how clubs that splash millions on their transfers do very little to help them settle, it has a quote from Luther Blissett who had an unhappy year in Milan.

"No matter how much money you have here" he lamented, "you can't seem to get Rice Krispies."

all the stuff on wages is around p60, where they show how little statistical significance there is in terms of transfer spending (which is not that important it seems), and how virtually everything in football is explained by spending on salaries.
