    Our squad

It was an ok performance today and considering the circumstances ( 10 men ) it was a good result, But Did anyone notice how strong our bench was compared to last season? , It's like we have made huge signings in the summer but I cant recall them , and considering we left Aqua and pacheco out , we are still looking for a left back and a striker and that makes us even stronger . Things are looking good

    Yes boy, yes boy!!!!

I sense a freshness and enthusiasm within the ranks. the lads did us proud today, every one of them put in a good shift.

As you say though, a left back has to be a priority, followed by a striker.

If we dont get both, i'd be very concerned. it's essential we have these positions covered!!

Have to agree about the squad. When the likes of Poulsen, Aquilani, Shelvey, Pacheco & Kyrgiakos all dont even make the 18, it bodes well.

It's pretty much the same squad as last season, but that was blighted with injuries (which didn't help).

We still need a left back and an experienced striker (to lighten the load on both Torres and Ngog)
        We come not to play.

LB and striker are definitely needed. It would be nice to get a natural winger as well.

Last season we started with Agger, Carra and Skrtel at CB. We then brought in Kyrgiakos. A year on and Krygiakos is adjusted to the league, and we have Kelly and Ayala a year wiser.

We all now know Kelly can cover RB, but we need a good LB with experience of the league to set us up.

Yossi for Cole and Jova for Riera has made us look so much stronger, whilst we finally have a fit Aquilani and Pacheco is starting to break through. If Mascher goes we still have Poulsen.

Striker wise we live in hope Fernando will stay fit, whilst N'Gog looks a lot stronger than last year. Add another striker and we will have good options.

                First/Second XI

                Reina/Jones (likely)
                Johnson/Kelly
                Aurelio/Insua
                Carragher/Skrtel
                Agger/Kyrgiakos
                Kuyt/Maxi
                Jovanovic/Babel
                Gerrard/Lucas
                Mascherano/Poulsen
                Cole/Aquilani
                Torres/N'Gog

Not forgetting: Cavalieri, Darby, Ayala, Wilson, Spearing, Shelvey, Pacheco - Players I would class as ones good enough to get games in the league cup or against the weaker sides in the Europa league and FA Cup.

Then there are players like Ecclestone, Amoo, Ince, Dalla Valle who have done well in pre season. Some good depth to the squad I think.

Its not a bad bench, but would Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea swap their bench for ours? I think thats the marker for having a decent squad...

it's just that we can't afford to spunk 30mil on a striker and then have him sitting on the bench

it's not just £30m players though - united and chelsea can and have signed players for up to £15m and never played them for full seasons....

We make one £3m signing and the media is expecting him to be straight in the first team or he is a flop. It's a piss take.

I do think, if we get a good injury free run then we have a reasonable decent squad with some good competition for places and some talented youth trying to push through.....I'd feel a lot happier though with a good left back and an extra striker.

Due to bordom and vague interest I had a look at Manure's top ten signings by value - taken from Wiki

Take out Veron and the horse and the other 8 are most certainly still at Old Toilet - I think it speaks volumes of how we've competed against them (bar last season) - just shows that for all the talent in the world as a football manager - without heavy spending you're going to find it tough going to compete!

1 Dimitar Berbatov Tottenham Hotspur £30.75 million September 2008
2 Rio Ferdinand Leeds United £29.1 million July 2002
3 Juan Sebastián Verón Lazio £28.1 million July 2001
4 Wayne Rooney Everton £27 million August 2004
5 Ruud van Nistelrooy PSV Eindhoven £19 million June 2001
                        6 Anderson Porto £17.3 million July 2007
7 Owen Hargreaves Bayern Munich £17 million May 2007
8 Antonio Valencia Wigan Athletic £16 million June 2009[44]
9 Nani Sporting CP £14.7 million July 2007
10 Michael Carrick Tottenham Hotspur £14 million July 2006

Our total spend on the top 10 is £150m compared to £212.95m on theirs.
Only 5 of those players are still with us, compared to 8 of theirs.
