    Hyypia wanted Reds return

Bayer Leverkusen executive Wolfgang Holzhauser has confirmed that Sami Hyypia wanted to re-sign for Liverpool.

New Anfield manager Roy Hodgsonconfessed earlier in August that he had unsuccessfully attempted to prise the veteran centre-back out of the remaining one year of his contract in Germany.

Hyypia left Liverpool at the end of the 2008/09 season when former boss Rafa Benitez decided not to offer the ex-Finland defender a new deal after 10 years on Merseyside.

But Holzhauser has confirmed that Hyypia was keen to return to England, having worked with summer appointment Hodgson at international level.

    Open discussion

Holzhauser told the Express newspaper: "Sami came to us asking if there would be any chance to return to Liverpool.

"We had an open discussion. Sami accepted straight away that we were desperate to keep him here.

"He is too important for us and a valuable part of our first-team squad. We could easily imagine keeping Sami at our club for more than the remaining year of his contract.

"He may add another season on the pitch and we are also considering adding him to our backroom staff afterwards, if he wants."

According to reports, Hodgson wanted to offer Hyypia a four-year contract that would see the 36-year-old play until June 2011 before moving into a role as assistant manager.

    Wha?

Id love to see Sami back at the club. This he has alot to offer our young defenders. Might not be the quickest, but he is certainly one of the best thinking defenders in the game
    *Except Michael, who died.

doesn't make sense - he'd offer a 4 year deal that finished in june 2011, thats what 10 months away - unless of course, it's a 4 year deal, thats 12 months playing contract followed by 3 year coaching contract which is excellent

those ****ers can **** off if they think they are keeping him when his playing days are over.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

HAHA not a ****ing chance! If we come knocking again next summer and offer him a player/coach role he will come home without a doubt! He wanted to return this summer so WTF is he chatting if he thinks he can keep Sami after this season when his contract runs out!

Sami will be back next year IMO.

the best thing about germans used to be in the early days of sky tv you'd be able to watch some of their channels and I clearly remember at about 4 in the afternoon flicking over to see a 'mature female school teacher' pleasuring several of her female students in some soft porn flick. oh that and the indoor football during their winter break.

                      We want Sami back.

he left to play, we were offering a playing contract.

but what about assistant manager? thats a bit of a leap isnt it? defensive coach maybe but straight to assistant manager? no wonder he wanted to come back
