Its not really rocket science. All players are constantly conditioning themselves to the circumstances of the game. It's no different than deciding what tackles you can make when you have a yellow card and those you can make when you don't. Or what you can get away with in a derby game vs. a European game. Referees and refereeing is so inconsistent you have no choice but be able to adapt.
