It was Gerrard and Mascherano and Gerrard is still here.

Momo was class until he got booted in the eye and was rightly shipped out as he was poor.

Alonso wanted to leave due to bad man management skills and was replaced with a crock who can't adjust to the league.

Mascheranos family couldn't settle and went on strike to force through a move.

All three left for differing reasons, the only one we could have prevented (momo) is the only one no longer good enough for us.

The major problem has been the failure to replace. Aquilani was a costly failure. Now Meireles has come in and we'll see how he does.

It's pretty much Poulsen in for Masch and we all know that's a massive down grade as Masch is the best DM in the world and Poulsen is nowhere near.

That said, the fact we used to get bossed in midfield by the best teams even when we had all of those suggested it probably wasn't the best midfield in the world anyways.........

He's a miles better DM than Lucas or Poulsen.

lets see how much of a downgrade poulsen actually is on masch.

masch was bereft of proper attacking involvement. thats fine in spain and italy where its almost a case of defenders defend, attackers attack and never the twain shall meet.

the uk requires more dynamism especially in CM.

secondly, scandiavians have a habit of actually fitting in quite well with the english style of play. a sizeable amount of bargains have been had from scandinavia and it wouldnt surprise me one bit if poulsen is one of those.

there' every chance we'll have a more effective all-round player for us in poulsen. better attacking play at the cost of less defensively. well perhaps masher was overly defensive for the prem and it cost us in terms of moving forward.

time will tell about Meireles but he looks an upgrade on lucas thats for sure (and I do rate lucas...). so comparing LAST years midfield, i think we are better. Comparing it to Alonso & Mash behind Gerrard and I think we're marginally worse off on paper BUT, possibly Poulsen and Meireles may be a pairing better suited to the prem than alonso and mash. lets see. its certainly not cause for writing us off.

Poulsen, Meireles, Cole, Jova, Kuyt, Lucas and Gerrard give us decent options. We should be able to do well with that.

So is Bellamy and Crouch, plus Baros and Cisse. And a load of others I could mention. Warnock would be nice to have at LB.

But I wasn't unhappy about any of them leaving. Problem is we haven't replaced them properly.

We never had the best midfield in the world, we just liked to think we did. We got dominated in midfield in numerous games.

And yeah, I get we have spent **** all money. I think I've said that enough times in the past, and tbh, I'm fed up of reading numerous threads saying we're ****ed until we get new owners. We all know that anyway. I don't need some muppet on here to point that out.
