So essentially we have spent 20 million on transfers since reaching the European Cup final. An Aquilani + minor player sale will lead us to breaking even. Considering the above situation, I am now less inclined to criticize Roy irrespective of what tactical gaffs he makes. It would be insane expecting any manager to win anything when the squad is regressing at such an alarming rate. Outside of Wenger, I cannot even think of a single manager who can operate at the highest level under such restrictions.

Already arguing about those very same figures in this thread, along with this one and several others I expect

Actually, Aquilani's a good point though, throw in Plessis, El Zhar and Insua, none of whom are at the club anymore really or likely to return, then the net spend is essentially 0. And if you take a slightly shorter view, the figures for the last 24 months just start to look like asset stripping. No way can we compete with the likes of Spurs, let alone anyone else up there.

As long as we finish above Everton....

Therefore I lied to please the mob.

    Mine angry and defrauded young?

I'm not a fan of net spend as it doesn't give an accurate picture. If you look at it over the last 5 years Man Utd have spent less than us, mostly due to the sale of Ronaldo.

The only accurate way I think is to look at the current cost of the squad, ignoring home grown players completely as they the product of our development and coaching. This is the true cost imo and shows us where we really are when being compared to the likes of Spurs and Utd. Take Utd as an example and Ferdinand £30m, Rooney £25m, Berbatov £30m, Carrick £18.6m, Hargreaves £17m, Nani & Anderson £25m. £146m on 7 players. Theres a few more to add to that too but I don't have time.

Reina £6m, Aurelio Free, Skrtel £6.5, Agger £5m, Johnson £18m, Lucas £5m, Kuyt £10m, Babel £11.5m, Poulten £4.5m, Cole Free, Kochesky £4m, Miereles £11m, Torres £22m, Ngog £2m. £105 on pretty much on 14 players or 71% of Utds spend on twice as many players....says it all really.

Spurs have spent £101m on their midfielders alone! All 13 of them. The sum total of our squad must rank about 5th or 6th I reckon.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

On February 1st, 2010 Tom Hicks claimed that the Summer Transfer Window of 2010 will be a massive one.
Here is the full breakdown, I am showing that 11 players have arrived while 17 players have left.
Roy is facing the same headaches that Rafa had to deal with (lack of funds), for the 4th consecutive transfer season the club has had a negative or zero net spend. Yes, there are some transfer fees that are undisclosed but from what I am seeing so far, the club spent £25 million while selling £38.1 million. This probably means that Roy put £13.1 million in the bank to probably cover the interest on the loan that Hicks & Gillett burdened on our club.

Also good to point out that Roy brought in Joe Cole on a high salary and looks like he was compelled to send out a few players on loan to reduce his salary bill to make up for Joe’s.
                In (11):
Jonjo Shelvey - 18 years old - from Charlton Athletic (£1.7 million)
Milan Jovanovic – 29 years old – The Serbian has penned a 3 year contract (Bosman)
Joe Cole - 28 years old - From Chelsea (Bosman)
Danny Wilson - 18 years old – from Rangers (£2 million)
Fabio Aurelio – 30 years old - Returned (Bosman)
Christian Poulsen – 30 years old – From Juventus (£4.5 million)
Brad Jones - 28 years old -From Middlesborough (£2.3 million)
Raul Meireles – 27 years old - From Porto (£11.5 million)
Adam Hajdu - 16 years old – From MTK Budapest (loan)
Paul Konchesky - 29 years old – Joined from Fulham (£3 million)
Suso -16 years old – - Made his loan move permanent (Undisclosed)
Total Spend : £25 million* (+ undisclosed fees)
Average age of players signed : 24.5
                Out (17):
Mikel San Jose – 20 years old (at time of release) – To Athletic Bilbao (Undisclosed)
Fabio Aurelio – 30 years old - (released)
Yossi Benayoun – 30 years old - To Chelsea (£7 million)
Francisco Duran -22 years old - (released)
Albert Riera – 28 years old – To Olympiakos (£3.3 million)
Phillip Degen - 27 years old – To Stuttgart (loan)
Alberto Aquilani - 26 years old – To Juventus (loan)
Diego Cavalieri – 27 years old – To Cesena (£1.3 million)
Krisztian Nemeth – 21 years old - To Olympiacos (£1 million)
Javier Mascherano - 26 years old - To Barcelona (£24 million)
Nabil El Zhar -24 years old - To Paok (loan)
Emiliano Insua -21 years old – To Galatasaray (loan)
Damien Plessis - 22 years old – To Panathinaikos (Undisclosed)
Lauri Dalla Valle -18 years old - To Fulham(trade)
Alex Kacaniklic -19 years old – To Fulham (trade)
Vincent Weijl -19 years old – To SD Eibar (Fee undisclosed)
Nikolay Mihaylov -22 years old – To FC Twente (£1.5 million)
Total Sales : £38.1 million* (+ undisclosed fees)
                Average age of players sold/released : 23.6
Of course I am not claiming that these fees are accurate but even if they are off by a couple of million it shows you the sad state of affairs at our club. We hope and pray that by next transfer season we will have new owners who will invent some money into our club, we need it badly.

We have to see what level we operate at before we say how good Hodgson is doing with limited funds.

Our squad was the 5th most costliest to asemble.

It was behind Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd and Spurs.

So by rights we should be looking at 5th place. Arsenal have done wonders with Wenger and so have spent far less than us, but it goes to show that if we were to finish 6th we could have no real complaints as that has been the ambition of our Club.

I'm not sure how little Arsenal have really spent, almost (if not all) of his transfers are undisclosed.

Just take two leaked figures, Zenit confirmed the Arshavin fee was £15m, Walcott £12m. Its hardly peanuts. I'm sure they've spent a lot more than people realise.

Vermallen was close to £10m too, as was that other defender they signed this year. Nasri was quite a bit too. They've done so well with fees in though compared to us, £50m for Adebayour and Toure (lolCiteh), that they could really justify having spent a lot more than they have.
