I think this thread is going way off course , It's about the 25 man squad that HAS to be named ,No if but's or maybe's and whether it's your choice or mine the opening post was bang on and it's A 22 man squad thats Roys only option with unlimited under 21's , now we are picking a starting 11 against ?????, team selection is dependant nowadays on the Opposition you play. Right thats me done get back on track lads just for the sake of our sanity

We're on track tho....the 25 man squad picks itself, so we can't really discuss it...the 8 homegrown, the 17 foreigners are given, we haven't got anyone else, and then the unlimited under-21s.

So the next logical thing to discuss was how to play them all. Simple no?

ATM I think Maxi deserves his spot on the right instead of Kuyt. Maxi played well vs WBA and we looked so much better with him there and Kuyt on the left. I know a lot of people have the problem with square pegs round holes etc so maybe Babel and Maxi deserve to start vs Birmingham away?

Anyway - it's done, window is closed – the squad looks a bit bare without mascherano and it’s a shame we didn’t get that extra striker. But I was expecting this too happen –

1 – we’re broke
2- we have a new manager and things needed to change.


Joe Cole is a massive signing, and if he can get a good run of form, and gerrard and torres get an injury free run of games, then the quality is there to beat pretty much any side outside of the top 4/5

The big questions is over Poulsen, Meirieles and Jovanovic – 3 new players, going to have a massive impact (be it positive or negative) . If miereles hits the ground running and poulsen finds some form – then we could be pretty decent. Massive massive question marks on Jovanovic, who at best looks like a freebie squad player....and if i was ryan babel or possible even Pacheco, i’d be getting my head down, busting a gut, and telling roy that place in the starting XI should be mine.

I think though, we have managed to strip down most of the dead wood out of the squad, it’s a massive blow ref mascher but he wanted out and we have to move on. – One thing though, that has kept me positive looking at that squad and with some of the ****e being moved on - i really hope that we see Pacheco/Wilson/shelvey/Kelly coming through – with the europa league we have the best chance in years to blood these youngsters and this is the first time in a while I’ve been quite keen/excited to see 3 or 4 lads given a chance and I am hoping that at least one of them finally gets/takes their chance and bursts through – that would be a massive boost to the whole squad/fans.


We need a bit of luck on injuries, a bit of good management by focusing the key players on the remaining 35 league games, and against all odds, we could force ourselves back in too that top 4. – By which time, maybe by some miracle we will have new owners and the chance to build on this coming season which i see as steadying the ship a bit.

Thats the best i can see from it – i ain’t thinking about the worst!

hmm - i'm not so sure we have filled out the squad with kids as such - in fact you look at the the 25 named players - if this makes sense - to me only darby and spearing have taken places that I'd rather went elsewhere - how can i explain this - right, darby and spearing don't look like they have much to offer, and imo have only stayed as they completed the 8 home grown players....had we for example signed carlton cole one of those would have been bombed out.

that said though - yeah it's worrying - our key players - gerrard/cole/agger/johnson/torres - basically for their positions are massive for us for what they bring in an attacking sense, all have suffered with injuries - and in essence, we don't have much cover to rely on

On the other question raised, I'd drop jobs and play maxi on the right and kuyt on the left. How we finished against west brom.

Squad then: Dudek, Traore, Carragher, Hyypia, Finnan, Riise, Alonso, Gerrard, Luis Garcia, Kewell, Baros, Carson, Josemi, Hamann, Nunez, Biscan, Cissé, Smicer.

GK: Better now.

Defence: Better then: Finnan, Carra, Hyypia and Riise.

Midfield: Better then: Garcia, Gerrard, Alonso, Kewell

Striker/s: Better now (purely because of Torres).
