I doubt that a combination of Gerrard and Mereiles will work. You need an out and out defensive midfielder in the team or else the gap between the defenders and the midfield often becomes a problem.
I like that the most out of our options. I think Roy will go with Poulsen for Lucas though. I think the substitution of Lucas rather than Poulsen (who I thought had a worse game, at least until that point) against Birmingham adds at least some evidence for this conjecture.

When we play the lesser teams in the cups I'm more than happy for N'Gog to occupy that ST spot.

So where does that leave Babel? Well for me we need to be putting him wide left or behind the striker.
Behind the striker for e in certain games as he is useless on the left. But IMO he'll be off in January, same with Lucas and Kyriagkos.

Hope that is the case, IMO Poulsen has more to his game and we've still to see the best of him so i hope your right.

Swap Poulsen for Lucas and I think that'll be fairly close to what we see. Gerrard and Mereiles could also interchange positions, and with Kuyt and Cole, we've got flexibility for moving the 3 behind Torres around a fair bit too. Should suit the reserve players to come into this also (Pacheco / Maxi / Jovanovich)

              4-3-3 morphed into a 4-2-3-1

              Torres
              Cole Kuyt
              Gerrard
              Poulsen Miereles

I have seen a lot of Poulsen through the years and he won't be much better. His lack of pace and not having the vision to compensate that counts against him.

Seen bit of him myself he certainly isn't quick but has other attributes to his game, Alonso was a snail but he also had other attributes to his game. Although completely different i'm hoping that Poulsen will have to positional sense and smarts so to not get caught out for his lack of pace centrally and think all we're looking for him to do is break up play, close down space and to have better distribution than Masch and Lucas which IMO he has.

Guy is never going to be a world beater but if he's functional and solid, bit productive hopefully with players like Gerrard/Cole & Torres around he can blend in nicely and add some continuity and calm infront of the backline which we desperately need. Alot of if's and buts though, sure we will see.

I genuinely have no idea what the best option for our midifled is.

Yeah i think until their all fully fit and playing together for a good few games it's all pie in the sky as to who are the best options in midfield for the team.

You and Roy both I suspect.

Roy would be more concerned about our midfield I think

Best Option for me depends on who we play at the back and what formation since Roy is playing 4-4-2 i'd go with this if everyone was fit and available

                                Kelly - Carra - Agger - Aurelio
Johnson - Poulsen - Raul - Joe Cole
                                Gerrard and Torres

                                otherwise

                                Johnson - Carra - Agger - Aurelio
                                - - - - - - - Poulsen/Raul - - - - - -
                                - - -Raul/kyut - -Gerrard - Babel
                                - - - - - Joe Cole - -
                                - - - - - - - - -Torres
