I remember having a massive debate with some mates - mostly Mancs and nearly all Ingerlund fans - and all of them said Lineker was better. Wouldn't have it at all. I got pretty mad.

If we had better wide players, I would be happy to see gerrard dropping to the middle. As it stands, he should be deployed behind Torres with Cole as one of the wide players. Miereles in the middle with one of Lucas or poulson would provide better balance whilst keeping as much quality upfront as possible.

Gerrard's position should be what's best for the team and I guess this depends on what Miereles position is. Personally I'd go with:

Kuyt/Babel Gerrard Cole
Torres

He scored 59 goals in the last three seasons playing in the advanced, free role. 20 goals a season. Why would you change that?

I understand with Alonso we were able to get the ball to him much more so than we do with the black hole of Poulsen and Lucas. Hopefully Meireles will make a difference.

Different games and situations in certain games will require him to drop back, but generally speaking for me he has to play off Nando (Cole left).

Is exactly why he should be playing CM.

Put simply, he's our best player. When he plays well so does the team. I can't remember the last time Gerrard had a good game and we lost.

Torres I would say is probably more important I guess as we don't have a good enough striker to replace him with, but I'd say he's our second best player.

When Gerrard plays off Torres we have basically our two best players, probably two of the best players in the whole world, playing up top together. Yet in too many games last season, and games already this season - They've looked poor.

And they don't look poor because they are bad players. They look poor because they don't get the service. LFC at this moment in time could have Pele up top and Cruyff of him, chances are, they'd do **** all as well.

Because not even two of the greatest players of all time can do anything if they don't get passed to in decent positions.

Now I'm damned sure that if any of you lot reading this managed a part time team, you would manage it in a way that allowed your best players to be effective during the 90 minutes.

I don't know if Gerrards best position is CM as I haven't really seen him play there for years. What I do know is he is better than any of the CM's we have and is exactly the player we need when in possession of the ball, someone to demand the ball of the CB's and someone who can get attacks started, as well as join in.

I think the team needs him at CM. And if he's happier there, well all well and good. If it makes anyone feel any better, he finally got the chance to play CM for England the other week without having to compensate for the slow and like minded Lampard, and he was IMO fantastic in both games.

It would of course be last season as he was hardly great against West Brom and that's the only win I count this season.

He had a great game agaisnt Arsenal on the back foot though. He was CM for that game as well, but it was more about protecting than anything else.
