The "perfect" season to give our youngsters a chance

I doubt that any Liverpool manager will have the same opportunity as Roy now have this season.

No high expectations. Just to steady the ship and move on from there. This of course means that the manager can gamble more and give our youngsters the chance they need and some of them deserve.

We will probably drop more points this season because of that but we don't really have a chance to finish in the top four anyway but the youngsters that get the chance will be very important for many years. It's the youngsters that are the future of the club.

It's the youngsters that can take us back to the top again but that will only happen if the manager starts to give them a chance instead of more experienced players.

This season is the "perfect" season to give them that chance. Play Pacheco instead of Jovanovic or Babel for example. Play Shelvey instead of Poulsen/Lucas. Wilson instead of Carra/Skrtel. That is some examples of what Roy can do. Not all of them at the same time but at least one of them in every game.

If Roy is brave enough to do that then we could get the same effect as Man U did when Giggs, Scholes, Beckham for example got the chance.

It's all about if Roy is prepared to think more long term than short term.

Jonjo is a CAM type CM. Playing him istead of Lucas/Poulsem who are more of a DM type CM makes less sense. Having said that, I agree with you that we need to get Pacheco involved some how.

4-3-3 with Cole and Pacheco on the wings with Gerrard-Meireles-(Lucas/Poulsen) as a 3 man midfield

We still have to try to get into the top four and Champions League, it is still a possibility, but to do so we have to play our strongest side.

Being in the Europa League gives us an opportunity to blood the youngsters as does the Carling Cup, but not is not the time to regularly play youngsters in the league.

I'm pretty sure that Hodgson has been tasked with a top 4 finish, he wants to keep his job I'd have thought therefore he'll play the players which he thinks gives him the best chance to grab fourth.

have to massively disagree with the OP.

            a) no reason we shouldnt betrying to get into the top 4 this season other than Roy is crap or torres/gerrard/reina are injured all season
            b) while its great to bring in the youngsters, the players you mentioned gradually got brought into a 'winning team' and were often given 30mins when 2 or 3 nil up. As you can see with th Tony le T's of this world bringing in a young kid and expecting them to perform could have a long term problem for them. You say no expectations, we are Liverpool FC there are always expectations.

btw, Arn reminds me of Anfield Forever II. The same avatar AFII used to have and same dreams of youth being given a chance. Has he done any scouting reports on potential signings yet

I should add I liked AFII, he was great to read.

The thing was though that Scholes, Giggs, etc. were good enough to play - they were as good or better than the alternatives in the United squad. I'm not sure you can say that about our young players.

I kind of agree that the season should be used to develop players but we have both the UEFA and league cups to use so I don't think we have to force it in the league. That said there is definitely a case for using some of the young players as subs at least in the PL as the likes of Jovanovic are yet to make a significant impact.

I do find Roys use of Spearing puzzling - he doesn't seem to be in with any sniff of real first team action but if we have a chance to play a weakened team he seems first in line. At his age I think he has to be stepping up or shipping out really. He is right on the borderline I suppose and Rafa seemed to be willing to let players be thought of as young and developing until about 23.
