    Hansen talks more crap

Hansen: Hodgson is beginning to reap what Benitez sowed

Liverpool legend Alan Hansen believes Roy Hodgson’s difficult beginnings at the Anfield helm are being undermined by the previous managerial regime of Rafa Benitez.

Much of the preseason optimism has evaporated at Liverpool according to the aforementioned Anfield hero, but Hansen believes Hodgson has already made inroads into a squad that was in desperate need of an overhaul, praising the additions of Raul Meireles and Joe Cole.

Hansen, who won eight league titles during his illustrious Liverpool career, believes Hodgson needs time for his team to gel but ultimately the former Fulham boss will be judged on results.

The former Liverpool captain told the Daily Telegraph: “Roy Hodgson is beginning to reap what Rafael Benítez sowed in his final 18 months.

“When he replaced Benítez as manager of Liverpool, Hodgson accepted an incredibly hard job because he was left with a team that, while not in total disarray, simply were not good enough.

“If you set out to challenge for a Champions League position and finish in seventh, then the team are clearly not up to requirements.

“Hodgson knew the task facing him at Liverpool when he left Fulham, and you have to say that he has already cleared out some of the dead wood and replaced those players with better personnel.

“But it is all about results, and when they are not going your way, people will begin to ask questions.

“After the defeat at Manchester United, it is clear that Liverpool are still suffering from the same problems away from home that they have had for a while.

“They were abysmal away from Anfield last season and have only managed one point from three away games so far in this campaign.

“The big concern, just five games into the season, is that Liverpool already find themselves 10 points behind Chelsea because, at the outset of the campaign, there was real optimism that they could put up a good show in the title race.

“After ending the last campaign in doom and gloom, there was a lot of hope at Anfield generated by the signing of Joe Cole and the announcements by both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard that they were staying at the club.

“It was a lift for everybody and, with a couple of good signings in Raul Meireles and Christian Poulsen, the outlook appeared much brighter.

“I am not saying that I expected Liverpool to win the title, but I certainly believed they could put up a decent show.

“You have to say that the hope and optimism has diminished after just five games.

“Progress has been made by Hodgson, but despite the reality that his players will take time to gel into a team, results are everything.

“So despite the positives that Hodgson has already brought in his time as manager, the story so far is mixed and the emotions of the supporters are fluctuating between high and low.”

I'm not sure what he says deserves the title you gave it, or indeed that the article has. I disagree with the idea that we have seen anything particularly positive but I think you have to accept that at the end of last season the team and squad was not in a good way.

I still think that the main issues last season were fitness related (and actually a lot of teams suffered in the same ways for some reason last year). We were however lacking in experienced attacking options which made the impact of ****wittery from Riera and injuries to Gerrard and Torres more severe than they should be. The majority of the blame (IMO) lies with the owners and the fact that Rafa had not been given time to get a production line of younger players in place but the fact remains that we were not in a great position when Roy took over.

Can you tell me where the crap part is please? It all seems pretty much accurate to me with only a few small points where opinions can differ, but only a little?

They were abysmal last season away from home.....So we appoint the manager with the worse away record in the premier league ( I Imagine). Makes sense.

Also I would say the reason Hansen is talking crap as its easy to point some blame onto benitez, then but when you have 3 transfer windows where you are in profit, its not difficult to work out that the team is going to be going into a steady decline.

It's an absolute joke of an article.

And even before you start to pick it apart, the entire article is undermined by the fact he never makes a single reference to the biggest problem at Liverpool. But then he wouldn't want to run the risk of losing his cosy little seat next to Kenny and Rushie, would he.

I've also seen Kenny talking crap lately. They will hardly criticise the club.

He's referring specifically to the last 18 months under Rafa which saw the loss of alonso and the purchase of aquilani and maxi and of course the apparent agreement to let mascher move on after the season. rafa made some dreadful purchases in this period, with cole and meireles, and perhaps poulsen replacing rafas lovechild levia, he thinks things have improved?

                        Yes. I would.

We lost a massive player in Mascherano and also lost a good one in Yossi. The rest were ****e. Both those two players wanted to leave so not much Roy could have done there as it was out of his hands.

With the transfer funds available to him Roy has drafted in reasonable replacements. Only real problem I had in the summer was his failure to land a striker. But N'Gog has done well so even that is not too much of a concern.

I think everthing Roy has done has to be taken into account the funds he had available.

That is true in fairness. But I'd hardly want people connected with the club talking ****e and dragging down morale.

My biggest problem under Rafa's reign was the amount of ex-pros always taking a dig (of which Kenny was not amongst). It didn't exactly help so I'll be delighted if they all keep their mouths shut.

Over £2m of which were wasted on a keeper you mean? With an additional £3m or so being wasted on an ageing left back?

                            Those funds?

The BIG and more or less only reason to why we are not challenging any more is because of money, the lack of it.

Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing to do with the manager or players. We simply can't compete anymore because every manager need to weaken the team first and then hope that the signings will deliver straight away or else the team will be weaker for at least a few months time.

Nothing to do with Rafa or Roy.

Gillett and Hicks is the only reason that we can't challenge anymore. It's as simple as that.
