That's only a partial explanation as we lacked the same confidence last year with Rafa as well. The other side of explanation is that we lack quality and players like Cole and El Nino will not be able to produce their best until we surround them with proper quality players.Originally posted by Bender View PostWhy is the entire team lacking confidence? I do worry about Cole's role in the club, undoubtedly he is a quality player but it seems to be the same scenario with all Liverpool managers over recent years, we sign good players but don't play them in their best positions, we have a tendancy to buy 'in the hole' players and stick them out wide where they are less effective. For me Cole is the latest in a long line that includes Berger, Smicer, Garcia etc. If we're going to play these players out of position constantly why not just get someone who naturally plays in that position rather than fitting square pegs in round holes. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

His problem, along with many English players, is that he is a tactical idiot. His best play came when Mourinho more or less did all his thinking for him from the sidelines. In a lot of ways he brings many of the same tactical problems that Benayoun did in that he isn't suited to a central role but offers no width on the left. He is stronger though so may have worked if we had the level of organisation we had under Rafa.
In a lot of ways the biggest challenges for a manager of our team is trying to get the balance right for Cole and Johnson. Both are capable of being top players but bring no intelligence or instinct to the table. If they both click in a system then I think our squad would suddenly look a lot stronger.
I thought at least in the case of Johnson Roy's by rote tactics might help get the best out of them but the opposite has been true.
Currently I think, along with a lot of others in our squad, Cole is suffering from being misused and not being part of a workable plan in which players complement one another."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

We got Joe Cole and there was much elation, he was seen as a shining light in a summer of ****. We stopped Spurs getting him, and were really happy because it proved to some that we are Liverpool and we can still pull the top players, even if Spurs are in the Champions League this season rather than us.
Then they signed Rafael van der Vaart.
