Red Man Walking: Roy Hodgson's Liverpool future still on a knife edge despite last-gasp win

    By Dominic King
Last updated at 11:02 PM on 2nd January 2011

Roy Hodgson remains a dead man walking despite Joe Cole’s dramatic last-gasp winner against Bolton.

Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s American owners, are actively examining suitable candidates to replace the current manager after his failure to produce results on a consistent basis.

The Liverpool boss was granted some temporary respite at the weekend, as his side came from behind at Anfield to beat Bolton 2-1. But he remains in a vulnerable position and it might not necessarily be that Liverpool’s next bad result will be the tipping point - it could happen sooner.

FSG are even prepared to bring in a caretaker manager - raising the prospect of an emotional return for Kenny Dalglish - to see Liverpool through to the end of the season before appointing a young coach in the summer.

Marseille’s Didier Deschamps is one potential candidate but it is understood that lack of experience could count against Andre Villas Boas, FC Porto’s promising 33-year-old coach. He has also just signed a contract extension until 2013 with Porto.

If Hodgson looks isolated from Liverpool’s owners, he can still rely on the support of the dressing room and Cole insisted the squad was right behind him.

The midfielder said: ‘We are all responsible – win, lose or draw. So it’s on all of us. We are all right behind the manager. He’s a gentleman and we want to do well for him and the club. We showed that against Bolton with the fight and the togetherness.’

Another man Hodgson was able to rely on was Steven Gerrard. There is no finer player to call on in a time of crisis than the Liverpool captain and
Hodgson’s ability to play that card on New Year’s Day has - temporarily at least - kept him in a job.

Hodgson did not intend to play Gerrard, who is making his way back slowly from the hamstring problem he sustained playing for England in November, for 70 minutes against Bolton. But an injury to Raul Meireles so early proved to be a blessing in disguise.

As has been the case on countless occasions during the past decade, Gerrard delivered just when it was needed. Trailing to a thumping header from Kevin Davies, the lowest Anfield crowd in the Barclays Premier League for seven years - and the lowest on January 1 since 1983 - was on the brink of mutiny until Gerrard’s arrival.

His sumptuous deliveries led to goals for Fernando Torres and Joe Cole but it was the force of will, the running and the leadership that was most impressive.

‘When Gerrard wasn’t on the pitch I was delighted,’ admitted Bolton manager Owen Coyle. ‘I actually said to him as he was coming on, “Could you not stay off a wee bit longer?” because I know the quality he’s got.’

Hodgson took great heart from his team’s show of character on the back of their woeful performance against Wolves. He said: ‘It was bad enough against Wolves when we played poorly.

‘But then Bolton sneaked a goal which they hadn’t really looked like scoring. I thought, “Can it be even worse, that even when we look like winning comfortably we are going to lose 1-0?” But the mood in the dressing room was very good.

'People were determined and were totally in agreement with me that we were going to turn it around. We left it late but we got there.’

I guess all that remains to be seen is when Roy goes.

Have to say though, Barrets article just looks like the regurgitated comments of Karlsentk of Twitter from earlier in the day........

On a side note, genuinely gutted if Villa Boas isn't an option due to inexperience. He is the one gamble I would take with no hesitation. I have a feeling he is going to be a true great. Looks to be in Mourinhos class, but with a more attacking philosophy and a more humble nature. A true LFC great in the making if ever I saw one.

After him, it's one of Deschamps, Klopp and of the more established coaches, Van Gaal or Mourinho of course.

Of the out of work managers, I'd go for Rijkaard by some distance over Rangnick. I don't like the sounds of him, but what do I know?
        Forwards.......

To me it seems fairly obvious......

FSG wanted to wait until the summer, but have had their hand forced. They dont want an interim manager, but neither do they want no manager.

Therefore they are working to identify and bring in their man now. They wont leave us rudderless (although im not sure it could be worse ) but as soon as they have the deal in place I expect a swift departure and appointment.

Until then Roy will be here, although i would imagine this week things will be sorted. Its technically holiday period until Tuesday, so my guess would be Tuesday (doubtful on the eve of a game), more likely Thursday new manager. Fingers crossed.

I think we'll end up with Deschamps.
I have one word to offer - honesty. I couldn't be devious if I tried. Joe Fagan.

To me it sounds like they are trying their damn hardest to get the long term manager in NOW. if that can't be done, they'll be turning to Kenny.

Question is, how long do they give it until they decide to wait until the summer?

After seeing the performance v Wolves, I would have said he has to leave with immediate effect, but then the players showed fighting spirit against Bolton and then you think maybe we can give it another couple of weeks.

Personally, I don't expect us to keep the run going under Roy, so I think they have to be very quick in deciding.

I wouldn't be surprised. Even though he has said something about being with OM until their new stadium opens, I think, it's not supposed to open until 2014, again I think, and 2014 is a long time in the future in football terms.

He'll either come in the summer or prior to then, or he wont come at all IMO.

Deschamps. Im not convinced it will be. Rumours are he was interviewed in the summer under the old regime, so alot of it could just be lazy journalism.

No, for me its more about a demonstrable development of youth, and an attractive style of play. Someone who wont have a paddy every week, and understands that for all intents and purposes Comolli is in charge of football affairs.

Comolli may well want Deschamps, but im just saying it could be old news re-hashed.

I think just like the Comolli appointment, it will be more leftfield.

TBF, Deschamps was asked in the summer, but that was before Commoli was at the club, but more importantly that was when we were in limbo with the old owners.

And of course you wont hear 'official confirmation' yet. What do you expect? Do you expect things to be done in front of the cameras?
Fair enough, i'm just getting a bit impatient with the whole thing

There's a link with Deschamps & Comolli isnt there? Worked together before havent they?

Me too and I'm quite excited about it in all honesty. I don't really buy the idea that they'll opt for someone with a low-ish profile. Comolli will go or him imo, even if that opinion is based on little more than them being French. He's a young guy who's done it all as a player and appears to have the makings of a top manager. Professional persona but seems to have a certain charm and personality. Deschamps with some decent backing in the summer is something to keep us going while watching Roy show of ****e at the moment.

Me too mate, it's a nightmare - if it carries on much longer, i'll end up bald

But this is the closest he's been. He's really on the brink now and crucially, i think NESV have now reached the point where their mind is made up. Which of course means that even results cant save him.

I think danny said earlier, and i agree with him - i think the owners are trying to persuade one of their preferred options to come NOW instead of June. That may take a bit of time. If they cant, Kenny will probably step in.
