Senior stars set for reserve friendly

    Jimmy Rice, 25th Oct 2010 - LiverpoolFC.tv

The likes of Ryan Babel, Fabio Aurelio, Danny Wilson and Jay Spearing could all feature in a reserve friendly against Huddersfield on Tuesday afternoon.

Martin Kelly and Nathan Eccleston, who have both enjoyed loan spells with the Terriers, may also be involved.

The game kicks off at the Galpharm at 2pm. Tickets are £4 for adults and £2 for concessions.

    Why the friendly then?
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

The whole reserve system in this country is a joke.

I like the idea of having the reserve teams play in the lower leagues like they do in Spain - would be MUCH more competetive & would negate having to loan players out...
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

            Annoyed.

A bit of notice, I'd have booked the time off - gonna try and swap some appointments around and get this afternoon off if I can, it's only 20 minutes down the road and for £4 and a few beers, it could be a decent afternoon slash evening.

We have this system in Norway, and it work OK. But some are actually looking to change it to the English system. The problem is that it can be very unfair to the other teams. In one match the reserve team has several senior players, in the next they have only kids.

It would never be accepted by the teams in those leagues so it won't happen.

For the strength of the game I do think something has to be done to make something more competitive. Not sure what the best viable solution is though.

IF as a country we want to help nuture top talent then something needs to be done to improve the reserve set up.

If B teams aren't to be allowed in the normal league structure then for the top two divisions one of the mandatory requirements for a club is to have a fully functional Reserve squad and link the fixtures to mirror the real league fixture list - get them playing local to the actual match, 3 hours before hand or whatever, discounted tickets for all. I'd imagine that a fair number of fans would like to take in the reserves and then follow it up with the real deal - anyone with a valid ticket to the big match gets into the reserve match gratis.

Reserve teams could be restricted to under 21s with a maximum of 3 over age players.

The Premier League/FA could also do more to help promote the reserves as a viable alternative to supporting your team. Dedicated TV/online channel, bit of sponsorship.

Babel being punished by being made to play with the kids again I see.

16: Australian 'keeper Brad Jones spills a deep cross from Chippendale, but a defender manages to scramble the ball clear with Odilon lurking.
