Now lets look at the picture and ask , why are increasing numbers of spanish , or spanish speaking players looking to leave anfield ?
The love has gone.
Look for example at the spanish national squad . The genuine joy the players feel when working together or socializing.
Contrast that too the mood around the camp at Liverpool or even the England squad ,or probably even every premier league team ,successful ,or not .
Look at the number of times we have seen in recent years , examples of violence between, not players from opposing teams,(as seems to happen more reguarly in latin countries (including Italy)) , but rather players that are "teammates".
It seems that genuine team spirit , in this ever increasingly money focused environment, has decreased. An increase in a self-centered attitude from players and managers and even owners, has caused a situation , where an individuals own success and reputation , is causing the letter "i" to be forced into the word "team".
Steven Gerrard, it appears has been consumed ,along with some other teamates , with a desire to win the premier league . Not being sucsessfull is not why they desire this trophy . Many have had lots of success in recent years. Two champions league finals in two years, Number one ranked team in Europe , even some of the players having won a world cup at senior or junior level.
But , who can blame some of these players for falling into such a mindset. Players moving clubs reguarly became a way that agents and their players could tap into an increasing stream of revenue.
Fewer players would stay at a club for life, or turn down an increased salary to stay with a club that they may have been with since a youth, or had geographical or family ties with.
This must surely have affected the teamspirits of players who had in previous years been used to working with the same group of people(fans included, over several years, to achieve common goals, that were sporting related and not financial.
Clubs also , bringing in "stars" , who take positions that a youth player might previously filled, forcing the youth player to leave , not because they never had the potential, but because they were never given the chance to succeed,
Fans that do not trust in the managers, or players, or clubs, because of these things.
Owners that are focused only on financial gain or ego boosting and whom have no ties too a city or club are leading the way in this behaviour .
When it comes from the top, this kind of dishonorable and self motivated behaviour, will pass down into the whole institution
A self perpetuating cycle ensues . Players , fans , and maybe even owners are feeling disillusoned.
A lot has been said about the body language at Liverpool in recent times. It does not appear to be a place of happiness, fingers are pointed and no real bond appears evident between players and also players and manger, anymore.
What needs changing is unclear. In some cases fans are building their own clubs afresh. Some players still play for their boyhood teams. Some players turn down the money to work for a team that they believe in.
I for one will be a happy man when the love returns to the game and when it can be a pleasure and a joy to support liverpool again.
Sad times
