    Ambition

I posted this in another thread when I posted a reply to why Kaka should be a realistic signing. You can replace Kaka with another superstar player.

It shouldn't be fantasy stuff and that is the problem. We are Liverpool FC and should be able to attract the very best players out there. That is what the ambition both from the club and us fans should be.

We shouldn't be happy with anything else than the best. That is the ambition we must have.

We must get rid of the ambition the club had for years. Aim for the top and not a just a top four place. That is the ambition we should have every year.

If we fans start to think it is possible to do that and NESV backs it up then everything is possible.

Torres was a dream signing. The aim should be to make more dream signings like him, realistic or not, that must be the aim, or we will win nothing.
That is ambition. That is the Liverpool way ambition. Not some joke top four ambition.

It is time to change the ambition many of fans have. The ambition must be the top, number one. The ambition must be to bring number 19 to Anfield as soon as possible.

We are Liverpool FC, one of the greatest clubs on the planet.

It took us a while to get back to that "signing top players" mentality after Houllier - we used to cry out for proven class I couldn't understand why we couldn't get those players. Instead of signing players from Inter or Barca, we were getting German clubs' cast offs and little known bargains (with the odd exception). I remember when we were linked to Kluivert and then signed Litmanen - it felt odd.

That changed with Rafa, Morientes was the first international huge name we had signed in AAAAAAAGES. We signed Luis Garcia from Barcelona and Xabi Alonso, and although they weren't well known at the time, we all knew these were top players and Rafa had some sway.

Feels like we're totally regressing now. We need NESV to make a statement of intent. To buy without having to sell, and a top player with a proven track record as well.

I agree Arn, we should be getting the equivalents of Kaka - can't see it happening though.

When the Fifa Fair Play stuff comes in we'll be one of the richest clubs in Europe again. That said.........

I think he was more in thinking that as a destination for a top player we have to get back to being the number one choice.

Most of the players we signed under Rafa were not even the second choice for clubs. Monitored, but not pursued. But it was mainly a money issue as opposed to anything else.

I agree with you the first thing we need to do though is find a manager who matches this level of ambition. Hodgson quite clearly isn't such a manager, the height of his ambition is Europa League football and a couple of away wins a season

However beyond that it's not that simple we need significant investment to even make us competitive, with the top 4 clubs. We need to see what the new owners will do investment wise, squad wise we are probably 6th in terms of quality and depth.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

A top manager will attract top players, Rafa had that going for him when signing the Spaniards especially.

No world class/top international player would see Roy and our current LFC as the way forward, a change in management is needed in order to change he mentality of the club. I have no doubt NESV would be willing to back a manager with the ambition you talk about Arn.

trouble is that what we as fans claim to be amitious signings and what the club and management class as amibitious signings vary drastically.

we all want the marquee signings but as far as i can recall, torres is the only one who jumps out at me in years and years who fits that bill.

evans, houllier, rafa and now hodgson all look at more than the name when looking for players to buy. they are looking at how they fit into the team, how they adapt to the british lifestlye, vaue for money etc.... where as we want to see kaka, ronaldinho, suarez and the like being brought to our club because they are the "big names" at the time. i personally wouldn't like to see us buy suarez because although he is the big name in football right now, IMO he wouldnt adapt well to england the country or england the stlye of football.

the players we have bought in the last 10+ yeras havent (in general) been anywhere near good enough but they, at the time we bought them, fitted the bill of what the manager thought wouyld be an ambitious signing. its a shame but IMO its what is happening and what will continue to happen. i dont see us buying any big name players but to continue in the raiding unknown foreign leagues teams for players - a la cheyrou, baros, insua, nunez, koinchesky, poulsen etc...
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

I'm still not convinced that signing a ageing Kaka is the sign of ambitions some make it out to be. He is a great player, a big name, but he is probably on the way down. In the next few season he will probably be after 'more playing time' or 'one last pay day'. I know he is only 28 but he seems to be collecting injuries and we have Torres, Gerrard and Cole to fulfill the need for pre-match write-ups that feature more doctors notes than tactical discussion.

I honestly think Torres and Alonso were genuinely ambitious signings in the sense that they were much talked of in the lists of players the big teams were after and cost significant chunks of our transfer budget to acquire.

Not sure that now is the time to give a **** about the willy waving requirement for a marquee signing. We need the right two, three or four players to gel the side and get a positive feeling around us (also probably a new manager to lead them). In the end the top players follow a combination of success and cash. With the league as open as it is a bit of consistency might be all we need to get back to the CL and we should focus on that short term whilst looking at the development and managerial part of the club for the long run.

We can't attract the best young up and comng players because we have **** all to offer them. A big name willy waving signing can probably help attract other players and is a public declaration of intent, even if practically it's not the beat move. We're a mid-table club still pretending to be a top club, and signing Kaka would certainly fit in with that.

Sadly, that is too accurate a description. I think a lot of young players would come to us for the money and the high profile though.

We also have famous nights in the Europa to offer

We obviously should probably sack off Roy and get in a manager who makes it look like we have serious ambitions. That said the likes of Spurs have done okay in the transfer market getting players in even before they were really challenging for anything.
