Liverpool Football Club was deeply saddened to hear news today that former defender Bill Jones has died.
The 89-year-old passed away from natural causes at the Countess of Chester Hospital on Boxing Day.
His death will be marked along with that of Avi Cohen - who died this morning aged 54 after a motorcycle accident last week - with a period of applause ahead of tonight's clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Both sets of players will also wear black armbands.
Bill, whose grandson Rob Jones also played for Liverpool, stacked up 277 appearances and 17 goals during the 1940s and 1950s.
The centre-half helped us win the First Division title immediately after World War II, scoring twice in the 'decider' against Wolves.
Bill played in our first ever Wembley Cup final against Arsenal in 1950, but had to settle for a runners-up medal.
He was capped by his country twice in the centre of defence, though he was versatile enough to operate in several positions at club level.
Liverpool Football Club offers its thoughts to his family at this time.
