Sometimes I think that as a matter of principle, I should stand up for someone being bullied. He was a young foreign student and you could see he was **** scared.
There's no point getting involved as you say, but it's hard to say nothing when **** likes this happens.
It's a catch 22 mate, of course one 'should' get involved but you also have to assess the situation carefully. These days, there's ****ers out there with knives and worse.

It's sometimes just not worth the risk.
There's no point trying to make a point with someone who is pissed, unless you're pissed yourself.
