    i'd like to see aurelio kelly and johnson playing in the side together to try and get the ball wide and deliver it to carroll with some regularit, with suarez playing as in inside forward.

      The more I see Suarez youtube highlights (), the more I think it would be a criminal waste to put him out wide, even in a 4-3-3. Nope, Kenny gave him number 7, he wants him to play number 7.

      When we get wingers, we'll be switching to 4-4-2 and teach Gerrard how to defend. My 2p.

        Because that is how numbers work these days.

        Weren't 7s generally wide players in old shirt/position correlations any way?

        What makes you think Gerrard will learn that now, at his age?

          It doesn’t seem to hinder Ronaldo, Messi, Villa, Pedro etc.
          If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

            When I was a boy 7 and 11 were wingers with the centre half wearing 5. But I can't remember what the formation was, can you?

              I really never paid much attention to shirt numbers until everyone got worked up about the change to squad numbers. I only know about the 7 being a winger thing because a friend at uni was obsessive with shirt numbering in Champ Man.

                    As others have said, Suarez is great at cutting inside from a wide position. The way Villa does. It could well be argued that his best position is that of a right / left forward (because he's practically 2 footed). I really hope that this is the case, because we can then play Gerrard in his best position - free role off the striker. Gerrard could be especially good in this position for us because Carroll can hold the ball up extremely well, which will give Stevie and Suarez a chance to break forward.

                    If you play Suarez behind Carroll, you limit Gerrard. And Gerrard is our best player as of last night.

                    It's got to be. Plus, if we get the 'right' left winger in, the three should be able to interchange fairly seamlessly.

                        If we push Gerrard back into midfield, we don't have another midfielder who is defensive enough to compensate. It's the same problem as why he doesn't really fit a 4-4-2. If we had Mascherano, that would be different.

                          We could end up having a Robbie Keane scenario with that then with Suarez taking up positions that Gerard would normally run into.

                          That's not to say it wouldn't work with a bit of practice.

                            Play SG back on the right then - moving in.

                            Suarez is not really an 'in the box' striker (form what I have seen)

                            Or play along SG on the left - 2 behind the striker?

                              Im not sure formation is as important as how we utilize the players. Suarez really needs to be playing an advanced playmaker. Carroll could be a great target man but I would rather we keep long balls up the middle to a minimum and concentrate on getting the full back's forward to provide width like Dalglish has already done. That way Carroll can be a danger in the box. Suarez and Carroll...in theory it has the makings of a perfect partnership.

                              Also, I don't see why we can't give Johnson a go on the right midfield for Carroll's sake but I guess with Konchesky away now we'll be a bit thread bare at Left back and Johnson is doing a good job there.

                                Just my gut feeling. A couple of days ago I thought "Ah well naturally we're going to play 4-3-3 and Suarez is going to be one of those wide forwards" but the option of pairing him with Carroll up front is just so tempting, especially after seeing 15 minutes worth of youtube videos (...). I've also read Kenny's interview on the offal which also hints that he's looking at that partnership going forward.

                                We need wingers though, something we don't have to make it work as well as it could.
