the tabloids are a wash with speculation about stevie and Rafa, most of it bull**** but would it have gained the momentum it as if Rafa gained a little more warmth, don't get me wrong the man as done wonders for this club and i trust him completely, but it's obvious when you read Gerrard's book that he craves a comforting hand on the shoulder now and again and a well done son,and probably some of the other sensitive souls in the side crave the same, would it seriously undermine Rafa's management to accommodate such players, maybe a smile and the occasional fist in the air or a thumbs up when we score would ease a situation that i admit as probably been blown right out of proportion but being there for one of your players in a time of need no matter how trivial it is is not a sign of weakness surely.and how many of us fans in an ecstatic match winning moment as looked at Rafa's deadpan face and thought come on fella show some emotion.just a thought.

Totally disagree.
It was Ged's biggest weakness, amoungst many admittedly.
Bringing in double standards of how players are treated just breeds resentment. If he started fawning over Stevie-G or anyone else publically how do you think the rest of the squad would take that?
Morale would be effected. Performances would be effected. Not good.
Rafa's way is spot on for me. Everyone is treated the same. No favourites = no problems.I hate Polanski

dont think he needs one mate if im hoenst.
He has admitted he knows how Rafa works, and he aint like GH in that respect. I cant see Rafa treating him like a son anytime soon. If he was to do it with Gerrard why not the other players too? stevie is a big boy now, he has to learn to handle the pressure better though. Stevie is captain of Liverpool, and needs to have broad shoulders and cant be waiting for Rafa to come and hug him.Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'
"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

I agree with you mate to an extent(Joyno), certain players need to be man managed to an extent to get the best out of them, and the first impression I got of Rafa was that he would be that type of a manger. But he isn't and it's maybe something he needs to improve at, and may well change a bit with age.
However to play the tactics he does, with not playing players each week, he maybe finds it more comfortable to keep at a distance. Also he might suggest that he doesn't want players in his team that need to be man managed, as they aren't strong enough.
Just a couple of thoughts.Thomas Hicks Senior

i agree with you on the fawning aspect but thats not my point, do you think Ferguson or even clough didn't or don't relate to there players when they sense somethings wrong do you think shankly paisley and dalglish never pandered or said well done when a top player needed motivation, maybe Rafa does all these things but my argument is he doesn't appear to by like this to the media which gives impetus to the gutter press headlines at the minuteOriginally posted by CharlieMansonsSquintTotally disagree.

Spot on - why should he fawn over Gerrard?Originally posted by CharlieMansonsSquintRafa's way is spot on for me. Everyone is treated the same. No favourites = no problems.
TBH, i find it all rather sad and pretty shallow for want of a better word that a player of Gerrards ability and the club captain needs to be constantly fawned over and told he's brilliant, it just sounds like he constantly needs an ego boost which after reading the book seems to be pretty much on the money.
Reading all of this brings back memories of the ' I'm the Man' celebration which seems to have to be the constant mantra to Gerrard if he is to like you.If you've lost your faith in love and music the end won't be long

I think it is a tough call. Getting the best out of Gerrard gives you one of the best players in the world. However to do it requires you to make him feel special and as a consequence requires you to give him special attention, thus taking the emphasis off the team.
At a guess I would say Rafa would hope that the rest of the squad should be the ones to show confidence in each other and build each other up. The manager is there to teach and take an overall view of what is best for the team. It maybe that to bridge the divide we need to bring in a new assistant/coach type role with an old player (I suspect we would all like to see Gary Mac) who knows the club doing the bigging up/looking after role."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
