thats us winning 10 and drawing 2 of our last 12 games.

Plenty of incorrect information about the CL places in this thread.

For the record.

England did get 5 places the year after we won it and Everton came 4th. Everton, however, ****ed up and got knocked out in the prelim round.

In response to this happening, UEFA changed the rules to state that a particular FA only got a certain amount of places, regardless. If a team won CL and didn't finish in their league's CL places, the lowest team in the CL places (4th for England) would miss out.

So if Chelasea win the CL and finish 5-6th, they will get a CL place next year and 4th won't.

That is exactly what i've said.

The year after we won the CL, england got 5 places - but that was a one-off, which Uefa couldnt avoid, and they put steps in place to make sure they wouldnt be backed into a corner again, and that no country will have 5 places again in such circumstances.

I've just had a horrible thought, what if we somehow get 4th above Chelsea only for them to win the Champions League and steal our spot. How gutting would that be

If chelsea play badly enough to drop out of the top 4, there's no way they'll be playing well enough to get to the CL final.

I agree it's Barcelona's to lose, but we were bad enough to drop out of the top 4 but win the CL in 2005

That was a miracle And in fairness, were we ever IN top 4 during that season? I thought we were always chasing everton and just never caught them...

And we didnt have to contend with sides like today's Barca and Madrid.

As much as I am enjoying this rejuvenated team spirit, the pressing game and the emphasis on passing it's all still on such tight margins.
The injury time penalty appeal yesterday, the panic towards the end of the fulham game at 1-0, stoke took a lot of breaking down. Only the wolves game was comfortable.

Anyway because things have gone our way - and we have made this good luck by working bloody hard! - we now have the platform to push on and start controlling games.

I'm trying to ignore what's happening above us - I remember last year with several games to go with could still catch Arsenal (I think) but it all went to **** with a couple of rubbish results.

We had two games in which we had direct influence over the teams immediately above us and we've already won one of those; pegging Chelsea back in the process. The other game is second to last in May (i.e. Tottenham), but that's a long time off yet.

I'll say it again, we can do no more than win our own games and see where it takes us.

To get 4th place we have to beat Spurs.

Chelsea have some tough games including two against the Scum, which as these are some of the scum's tougher games I don't want them to win them or they'll probably get 19. But Chelsea wins put them closer to the top 4.

I think we might get close but ultimately just fall short.

I think its almost an impossible task. winnign 10 and drawing 2 would still only put us on 70pts and not sure that will be enough for 4th.

Yes, I know all the reasons why it would be great for us to be back in the Champions League, but hear me out.

We have half a season of Kenny implementing his ideas in training and we carry on in this vein of form. The summer arrives and we acquire all the players we need early doors. We get a full pre-season underneath Kenny and we hit the ground running - taking our end of season form from this season, in to next.

Without the hassle of a Wednesday game, we steal a march on all the other teams around us and remain fresh and injury free. Winning the title and qualifying for the Champions League and having another two transfer windows to bolster the squad further for challenging on all fronts.

It's whether we can afford to miss out on the Champions League money and whether our summer transfer targets would be willing to miss out on Champions League football.

We need the mancs to beat Chelsea twice, and we need favours from City when their playing both Spurs & Chelsea. Also we have to be beating Spurs, actually if we want to even remotely consider 4th spot, we kinda have to win every game.

Its a massive ask and IMO a bit too far, we have some really tough games coming up in March and April including:

- Mancs (H)
- Sunderland (A)
- City (H)
- Arsenal (A)

With United,City & Arsenal all pushing for the league its going to be a massive ask winning those games. But i'll be happy with a strong finish whether we make the champs league places or not. But its a great feeling to be talking about progressing and moving forward, feels good at LFC right now.

We're well on track to qualify for Europa, so we'd just have Thursday games instead. Guess we could field the reserves, but it still takes up the coaching staff's time.
