The sad thing is that if Barnes was around today, we wouldn't be able to get him.

A modern day Barnes at this peak would walk into any team in the world

it meant he wouldnt have peaked in the 80s he would have peaked now so maybe not lots of league titles between now and then.

At his peak now, he would easily fetch £60m+. And he'd be courted by everyone, Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, City, the red mancs. Everyone in the world.

He was more direct than Messi, as in, he'd just beat men with power and pace, more than 'twinkle toes' type of control and skill - but that's not to say he didnt have it, because he did. He was more powerful than Messi is, but didnt have the same level of goalscoring as Messi does.

It's a measure of how good Barnes was, that i cannot think of another winger who has even come close to him, since his peak in the late 80s/early 90s. And i dont just mean at Liverpool. I literally mean in the world.
Our very own Peter Thompson was a better winger than Barnes. He was an out-and-out winger, a great dribbler and a fantastic entertainer.

Barnes was more versatile as he could play at centre-forward or in midfield, but Thompson was certainly a better winger

Just asked my dad this and these are his comments

"Not convinced Thompson was better than Barnes

Thompson was infuriating he'd beat a man stop, bring the ball back, beat the man again and then do it again for fun but invariably his final ball would be disappointing - this was supposedly a constant source of ire for Shanks

When Barnes went past someone he left them for dead and invariably delivered quality balls into the box"
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."

For two or three season Barnes was astonishingly good.
                    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I never saw Thompson, but if i said he was better, Redspin would say Barnes was

In any case, Barnes' goalscoring record for us was twice as good as Thompson's anyway.

I didnt listen to all of it but he talked about .....and some of this sure people know allready.....

                                * He was spotted by a taxi driver playing non-league
                                * His dad was chief of the Jamaican army, trained at Sandhurst and was the jamaican manager and in the cricket b team.
                                *
                                * Graham Taylor was the best manager and till only recently still called him boss
                                * Liverpool were the only club who came in for him, although Fergie said he would have if he didnt have Olsen I think.

I am going to look for a podcast later as it was very interesting......

I only listened to the first 30mins and those were the snippets i remember.
