Segura takes reserves role - Mcmahon gone !

Liverpool have replaced reserve team coach John McMahon with academy technical director Pep Segura, who will take over on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

Pep Segura takes charge of the reserves until the end of the season
The club say the move is part of their planning for the future, with a new structure to be put in place in the summer.

Segura, who has previously coached the likes of Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas through Barcelona's youth set-up, will be assisted by under-16s coach Steve Cooper for the reserves' remaining matches.

"The club have conducted a thorough review of all operations based at our academy as part of our overall strategy to constantly improve our youth and professional player performance," a club spokesman said.

"We have a clear vision of the way ahead and a number of changes will now be put in place to help us to build on the considerable progress already made.

"Pep Segura will step in as reserve team manager on a temporary basis for the remainder of this term only, before a revised structure is put in place this summer.

"He will be assisted over the next few months by Steve Cooper."

The reserves saw their ten-match unbeaten run come to an end in a 2-1 defeat at Blackpool last week.

Rumours elsewhere suggesting the following as the reasons hes gone

    1) Clashes between the youth team and reserve team coaches over players. McMahon had apparently wanted some of the youth lads to be permanently assigned to the reserves. The other academy staff want a slower more natural progression through the ranks

    2) They apparently want the same style of play played right through the academy-reserves and into the first team. Suggestions elsewhere is that McMahon is more keen on a counter-attacking philosophy rather than the system Borrell and Kenny have implemented / trying to implement

To be honest this seems like a pretty sensible change - if we want to have a production line from the time a player the enters the club at a young age to the reserves and first team then people schooled in the same philosophy heading up all of the stages makes sense.

Such a shame we can't have a B team, how many of the successful Barca lads went through eventually progressing from the B team through to the first team.

The reserve team level is not good enough, sending out the lads on loan is useful but depends on whether they get the games.

It does make sense that there is a joint up philosophy on playing style at all levels, Barca play the same style right through their ranks, this prepares the players for success.
        We come not to play.

At Stoke next season if rumours on twitter are to be believed.
Not Director of Football exactly but as manager with a brief to revamp the whole club.
Rafa has spoken that he is looking for a 'project'

Since Rafa got control of things, around 18 months or so. I'm of course happy that KK is now in charge but Rafa knew what he was doing and what we had to do.

KK is now obviously trying to finish the work started by Rafa.

To get an excellent Academy is the only way to success. We can't afford to spend spend spend because of the fair play rules so the Academy is the key to success.

Isn't both the same if you understand what I mean. There is really only one way forward, to get the Academy producing player after player.

They are both clearly doing the same thing.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
