    'I'm not surprised about Jay'

Kenny Dalglish insists he has not been surprised to see Jay Spearing dominating the midfield in Barclays Premier League fixtures over the last few weeks.

The 22-year-old has previous excelled on the Europa League stage and in domestic cup competitions, but Dalglish's arrival at the club has coincided with Spearing's conversion from fringe player to key member of the team.

And the gaffer told his pre-Birmingham press conference: "He's always been a good passer but maybe now he's got a bit more confidence and belief in himself, and he's encouraged more to do it.

"The games he's had and the performances he's put in, that will give him confidence. It has helped him.

"But he still does that (the snapping around people's ankles) and we wouldn't want to take that away from him.

"Jay's been fantastic in the games he's played for us, and that's a great lift for everyone at the club - to see someone like that coming through.

"Jonjo Shelvey was doing really well as well until he got injured, but now he's coming back in. Danny Wilson is the same and Martin Kelly too. They've all been really good for us this year.

"But Jay has been the one who's done as much as anyone."

Spearing did not start a league game under Roy Hodgson but has found himself in the XI in our last four domestic encounters in the absence of injured skipper Steven Gerrard.

Dalglish added: "Any team in the world would be a better team with Steven Gerrard playing in midfield and we're no different. You feel for players when they're injured but when they are injured someone else steps up to the plate. It's to their credit that they've all stepped up to the plate. Not just Jay, all of them.

"We've got a few injuries and it's how we react to that that's most important to us. And they've done fantastically well in adversity.

"When you consider what happened on Sunday: we start without our captain, we lose our captain, we lose Andy up front, we lose Fabio. Then we've got 17 and 18-year-olds at full-back against English, French and Russian internationals, and it didn't faze them. They got on with it, accepted their lot and did the club proud."

Sorry guys, the following doesn't contain and mickey taking pics of Spearing

Jay Spearing believes his patience has paid off at Liverpool after earning a run in the first team this term.

The 22-year-old was reduced to a bit-part player at Anfield under previous managers Rafa Benitez and Roy Hodgson and started just three games last season.

Now with Kenny Dalglish at the helm Spearing has been given a new lease of life and is set to make his 12th start of the season against Birmingham on Saturday.

Happy to have a foot firmly in the first-team door, the combative midfielder is keen to seize the opportunity after his hard work paid dividends.

"I have had to be patient for two or three years now and different managers have given me different opportunities," he told the Daily Star.

"I used to come in and then be out the next week. At that time I wanted to nail a position down as much as possible.

"I have had to be patient for two or three years now and different managers have given me different opportunities"

"It didn't happen for me then. But thankfully, now it has and I just have to keep it going and make the most of my chances."

With first-team openings few and far between last term Spearing was forced to venture out on loan in search of games, landing at Championship side Leicester.
Despite loving his time at the Walkers Stadium, the player was forced to admit he may have to drop down a division on a permanent basis.

He added: "I hadn't played as much as I would have liked, so I went to Leicester, played some games and loved every minute of it.

"We were lucky enough to get into the play-offs. I knew that if I kept grafting and kept showing different managers that I wanted it, one day it would come for me.

"It was hard. There were times when I thought to myself, 'What's going on? Am I going to break through at Liverpool?'

"It is something I have been wanting to do for four or five years, not just this season, and there have been times when I thought I might have to look elsewhere.

"It is one of those things when you need the support of family and friends to keep you going and I believed in myself and knew at some point if I kept going it would come."
