i dont think we should over exagerate how good lucas is. Of course his worth has been highlighted by the vacuum his injury has left, but he is not perfect by any strectch of the imagination. He's functional an tries hard, but does he ever score goals?? No.

these sorts of players need to chip in with a few each year at top clubs.

    thats my penneth worth.
Jacques Brel is alive and well and playing at Anfield

Its not Lucas job to score goals. Its his job to protect the back four and he does that better than anybody else in the team. I wouldn't care if Lucas never scored another goal for us in his whole career.

I would say Mascherano was world class for us yet he scored 1 goal in his whole Liverpool career. That is half the goals he has scored in his WHOLE career.

I've said this before, but Spearing isn't a holding midfielder (in the role of Hamann, Mascherano or even Lucas), his more a Sissoko type player - someone who chases and hurries the opposition which isn't really a defensive modielder and certainly isn't a holding midfielder. Also he's a better player with the ball than without it.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

              He doesn't even do that.

Spearing is a decent player but I feel not good enough for Liverpool, he is always demanding the ball in stationary position somewhere on the pitch. I think we need to improve the quality of players like Spearing, god forbid we lose Lucas again, We need another Mascherano or Alonso, not Jay Spearing. Jay Spearing is a Premiership player for sure, just not top 6 let alone to 4 let alone Title winning player. When we are up against players like Modric and hes not even in the top 3 teams, Yaya Tore etc .. Jay Spearing is not going to cut the mustard, at 5.6 he needs to be worldclass for me, hes not nor will he ever be so he would be a player I would move on in the summer, he has had more than a chance to make his make, that position for me has more influnce on the game than any other one and his play is not creative enough and rarely sets attacking plays off

I think now that it is being seen that Spearing can't hold a midfield on his own (I actually don't think its his fault alone - none of the other CMs has much discipline either) we should consider a back 3.

I'm still of the opinion that Spearing can be useful but using him as effectively a sweeper ahead of the back 4 is clearly not working and of late it appears he has stopped learning from his mistakes.

Watched the academy a bit this season - and Yalany Baio has alwaya impressed me as a DM, and IMO is already better than Spearing and he's only 17!!

When he wasn't playing for us everyone was convinced Spearing was a worldbeater.

It would be great if we gave a young player a chance in a position they had been trained up for though. It's clear that Spearing has been thought of as a more general midfielder and is now being somewhat exposed.

I don't know anyone who thought he was a worldbeater.
Ive been slated on here for the last 2 years for saying everyone views Jay and his performances through scouse tinted glasses.

Jay has never been a general midfielder? he isn't good enough in 1 facit of his game let alone putting all of them together.

What does he do? Jay can pass a ball 5-10 yards, he can run around, he flaps his arm when on the ball trying to show everyone he hasn't got anyone to pass to.
It's easier to list what he doesn't do well enough - he can't beat a man, doesn't have a burst of pace, can't get around the pitch and cover the ground, doesn't support or go past the front man (never did in the reserves either) because of his height he can't head a ball, he can't shoot, he is poor positionally and he is 1 footed.

If we're being blunt about it we would be ridiculing Jay if he played for any other PL side and I'll repeat it again if he was from any other country except England he'd be 'another **** foreigner clogging up our youth system' and christ on a bike if he was from anywhere else in England except Liverpool he would be hammered.

I's rather play Aurellio in the holding midfield role

I agree, but he'd die after seven minutes.
