Which considering we are using him as our holding player is a worry

Spearing has the mindset but unfortunately, he's completely useless.

Spearing needs to play alongside a disciplined defensive midfielder with great positioning.

When we had Xabi Alonso, he was the midfielder with great positioning and awareness. We partnered him with terriers first in Sissoko and then Mascherano.

Now we have Lucas as the positioning style midfielder and Spearing compliments him.

He may not be effective in terms of pressing, but he does it.

I agree that we need better than Spearing. I'm just trying to explain why he's been on and off in the games he's played this season.

Jay Spearing is without a doubt in my mind, the worst player in our squad getting games, and he's only "rated" due to perception. The things he supposedly does; tackle, close people down and break up play, he actually does very very poorly.

Yes, he's worse than Henderson, who has some patches of confidence where he looks a player. Spearing is just ****, a championship level player at best.

But he's miles above Spearing in every single way. He's a defensive midfielder who can actually defend, whereas Spearing is not.

Yes, perhaps we should pick one from that long list of players you often suggested were infinitely better than Lucas. I’m also pretty sure you used to go on and on about no need for a DM, probably accused people of being brainwashed by Rafa etc.

first half he was one of our better players, apart from the error that led to their first goal. constantly wanting the ball and moving it on quickly. second half like most of them he disappeared. he had a better game than gerrard who assist apart was woeful.
