The Academy should at the very least be able to produce decent homegrown players that can fill out the squad. He was one of them. Doesn't matter if he is the next Maldini or not, the fact he's local and cost nothing means he'd be great to have in the squad. A perfect vision of the club is a host of Academy players in the squad who provide good cover for the world class players we sign.
If the Academy doesn't work we have to divide our money into signing squad players as well as first teamers. We were always going to have to sign a RB this summer to replace Johnson & maybe a LB to replace Enrique. Flanno would've meant we could've at least saved the cost of one full back position.
As it stands we will be starting next season with one full back who has long term prospects in Moreno. I think I'd definitely look to keep Manquillo now. There would even be an argument to give Glen an extension on reduced terms if he'd take it. I'm not a fan, but the more players we need to replace, the less chance of signing the top class players we need.
Losing Flanno until next year has put a massive hole in our squad.

This type of model worked well for Man Utd for years people like Phil Neville, Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Nicky Butt etc plyed those types of roles for years. They weren't the greatest players by any stretch but they were decent PL players who cost the club nothing and allowed them to focus their spending else where. The other advantage of the Man Utd players named was that many of them were able to fill in in multiple positions, that's the sort of thing we need, the likes of Flanagan and Wisdom could hopefully do that but we could do with a few more.
