Flanagan's employers could provide support and education

Mr Greig suggests that the Probation Service could assist the defendant if required as part of a community order.

Mr Greig suggests that Flanagans’ “employers could work to provide support and education to ensure that this incident is not repeated.”

“Hopefully his employers can give him support and advice to help deal with the issues raised on that night.”

Mr Greig says that the court could impose a conditional discharge, meaning that Flanagan would not be punished for this offence but could be resentenced if he commits any further offences within a designated time period.

Also, I don't see how the club have any obligation to council him as it's not football related and he has the means to source his own rehabilitation pathway.

What message does that send to people that are violently attacked? How is a second time any worse than doing it the first time?

The idea is behind rehabilitation and education. Not just straight punishment. Its not always the right thing, but it has been proven to work.

He definitely needs some sort of education into why his behaviour is wrong. He just comes across as an utter ******, but surely it is in the best interests of society that he learns from this.

The witness statement is pretty devastating

He begins by reading a witness statement.

A witness calls Merseyside Police saying a male was attacking a female,

He saw the male throw the female into a wall and kick her when she was on the floor.

“He heard loud voices coming from outside in Duke Street he went onto the balcony he saw a group of people walking along in a loud manner.

He saw the female walking ahead of the male who was behaving in an agitated manner.

He says Flanagan grabbed Ms Wall outside Il Forno and pushed her against a wall.

The witness thought Flanagan was trying to kiss her.

He heard the female say: “You are out of order”

The male replied: “Shut up I will f***** knock you out.”

Rehabilitating him is not our problem.

I have no issues with us sorting him out with counselling on the way out the door, I'm for that, but our obligation ends there.

If it's within the contract to end his association with our club we should, we shouldn't be calling him a Liverpool player whilst it happens.

It's annoying, I liked him as a player, but I can't support him as a person.

I think there should be exceptions to your rule based on the nature of the offence

Kicking a person whilst they are on the floor, having got there via the wall that they were smashed into probably comes under that category
