Think you have just read it wrong. It dosent say Heysel and of Hillsborough were hooliganism which I assume you think he has said, he was just saying that the 80's were when hooliganism was rife and the same era of which Heysel and of Hillsborough took place.

The fact that it can be read either way is just plain wrong regardless of what was actually meant

It still conveys to people who may not know much about the subject the impression that Heysel and Hillsborough were equivalent, and in the context of hooliganism. Whether intended or otherwise.

This was the era of hooliganism, of Heysel and of Hillsborough. Margaret Thatcher saw football as such a hotbed of thuggery that she wanted to introduce ID cards for all fans.
why mention hooligansim then Hillsborough then thuggery? doesnt it infer they are all the same?

He's only listing negatives, but should have structured it better.

                  Other than that it's a non-article anyway...

But as the 1980s drew to a bitter end, there was a sense that the worst might be over. Lord Justice Taylor’s report on all-seater stadiums arrived in 1990, the same year as Gazza’s tears in Turin.
That reads like a list. There had to be change. Unfortunately, we don't only have the burden of this country's most successful club, we also hold the burden of this country's most horrific football tragedies. It's not something that should be hidden by militancy. It should be recognised as a turning point into what is better in football today.

No, it may imply that but the reader is the one that may infer something from the statement

lol - is that story actually true.....how did this go down.....

was frank macavennie walking round the ground acting the big i am because he scored...and then martin tyler said....."hmm come with me frank....i'll take for a walk through london, and we'll see just how famous you actually are" - really....so frank...believeing his own hype goes, yeah go on martin....i agree to this lets go for a walk and see how famous i am

What happened afterwards....after only having one fan recognise him.....did frank collapse on the pavement and weep as he realised no-one knew him

Did martin then hug him and say.....don't worry.....me, richard keys and Andy Gray....we're going to change all this....soon you footballers won't be able to cross the street without being "pap'd" - did frank mcavennie celebrate this!

                              Who knows...
