Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

If only it were that simple. Look at City and Chelsea's record with top class forwards and you'll find that replacing Suarez won't be that easy.

Torres had lost it and was rapidly declining as a player. Suggesting selling Suarez in his prime is just crazy and I can’t believe we’re having this conversation when it finally looks as though the club is going in the right direction.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

not true, there is a time to cash in on players and as fans we tend to think this is later than good managers do.

i have spent many conversations pissing myself laughing at the players that ginsoak has sold and saying its a mistake but look back and not many have.

of course we dont want to keep selling our best players but some individuals will always be sacrificed for the cash because they want to play elsewhere and the club can use that cash to strengthen.

Remember that the fake ronaldo left after winning everything with the scum. so it wasnt about winning things, he has won less at madrid.

has selling Torres weakend us? did we not replace Souness? keegan? etc etc.

i think we are probably talking about slightly different things. i am not talking about a club who always has to sell its best players. I am talking about a club that recognises when the time to buy and sell a player is, and that may well involve selling a player when his value is at its highest.

again i see no reason to be glum about it.

I don't think that is a fair statement.

ManU sold Ronaldo, the best player in the world at that time, and I certainly don't see them as a feeder club.

The reality is that South American players and any players who are of spanish or portugese background, for the most part, consider playing in La Liga for Real and Barca as the ultimate career goal and there is not much we can do about it for the reason outside of our control (e.g. Better climate, language, cultural similarities, family reasons etc.)

It isn't only about being big enough. The big English clubs will always have the climate and language factors against them. Then you also look at the difference in taxes.

Not much they can do about it really. Rafa tried his way forcing the foreigners to speak English as often as they could. Even Masch learned it but in general there isn't much you can do.

i think the argument people are making here which seems to be making waves is that barca or whoever will tap him up and take him before we are ready to sell, and we will be powerless to stop them even though things are looking up, and that's just depressing and hardly a foregone conclusion.

Yes, Wenger used to get lauded for cashing in on players at the right time, and look where that has got him.

And I’m not suggesting that we should not sell Suarez under any circumstances. The circumstances suggested that he won’t be able to resist Barca or Real or selling him to raise funds don’t sit well with me at this moment in time. Under new management I have to believe that as a club we won’t need to continually sell players to buy new ones and that in year or two we’ll be back competing with Europe’s best. If he leaves for family reasons, for cultural reasons or if he suddenly turns ****, then so be it. If he leaves when in his prime because we can’t hold onto him for footballing or financial reasons, then that’s a pretty depressing thought for me.

Also, he's played half a season for us and is on the rise; how about we win some trophies before we worry about selling on for profits? The transfer market is not where the glory is; the League and Europe are. Hopefully, our owners agree.

i suppose wenger would be in a better position now if he hadnt dont that?

i really dont understand why people think that its an awful thing for South American players holding Barca and Mardrid as the best clubs in the world.

we hold Liverpool as the best club in the world. everyone has opinions and for various reasons. pretending otherwise is a bit silly in my opinion.

Surely we should enjoy that ride we are on as supporters? i will accept that players come and go others wont. The journey is the same. I just wont get all pissed off when we sell someone. Of course i will get a bit pissed off but it wont be the end of the world and the club will move on as it always has.

Do you think they would have sold him if they didn't have to? Do you think Ferguson would be happy if Madrid came back for Rooney and his hand was forced again by either Glazer and/or Rooney, even if he was able to reinvest the cash raised?

United are maybe the one exception to the rule is this discussion, but consistently selling your best players is not a good model to build a successful football club on.

I tend to think that we'll be in the similar boat with Suarez when times comes and Barca/Real start calling.

I don't think for a second that we'll want to sell but if the pressure comes from Suarez himself (which I think it will happen especially given his previous comments about being a dream playing for Barca etc.) I'm not so sure that there is anything we can do to keep him (would love to be proven wrong).

When it comes to the other paragraph I totally agree but I think Suarez is the only exception in our current team (Aquilani aside perhaps) as our focus seems to be, among other things, to recruit the players especially British ones where the likelihood of losing them to other big clubs is minimal at best.

Comolli said it many times that the goal is always to look for the players that want to play for LFC and make their career here and while that approach will work most of the time, cultural differences, climate etc will become an obstacle from time to time when we recruit players from abroad especially from Spanish and Portugese speaking countries.

I don't see that as a problem as long as we get fair value for them, if they express the desire to leave, and we invest every penny to attract some other top players.

I dont think anyone is being defeatist or suggesting we sell our best players, it's just hugely likely that a Spanish speaking South American who's constantly said for years how he wants to play in Spain will probably want to get his wish at some point.

That's fair enough, but suggesting it will be in the next year or two when he isn't even half way through his contract isn't being very optimistic or hopeful.
