Release clauses are meaningless from a clubs point of view, whats the point? If he ever wants to go he'll throw a tantrum like they all do and we'll sell him to Real for about £60m, a 100m release clause doesnt change any of that.

I don't see any harm if you use double (triple) his value as the release clause as it may deter some suitors who may try to get him for cheap (like Barca always seems to do) and basically make the statement that we only want serious money if we ever let him go before his contract is up.

Agreed, it doesnt deter anything. Its not like Barca or Real are gonna go "Oh, he's got a £100m release clause, lets not bother going for him then", its just a meaningless number. These clauses are only ever useful for players.

Did Torres have a release clause in his contract? I thought the £50m was simply the figure we asked for.

No one (except club's officials) knows for sure but it was mentioned time and time again during January saga that he did in fact had one.

I still don't get how having a defined value in the contract is better for us than just demanding a really big fee. All it does is establish an upper ceiling to the value we could get surely?

case in point with torres. he insisted on a release clause, if you believe that sort of thing, because he wanted to leave if the club didn't improve. good for him, bad for us. assuming it's true it probably stopped us getting 60m instead. it's just leverage for a player, or an easy escape clause for a club that wants to sell but doesn't want to have to convince the fans it was a good idea.
