I learnt my lesson the hard way with Torres and as much as I would like to believe Luis I simply will not let myself be fooled and let down again.

Are you sure? I accept he spoke about the club and fans in glowing terms but I always thought many people's interpretations of his pronouncements and actions were wishful thinking and that his feelings were a lot more nuanced than they liked to think. Of course he liked the adulation but the idea he was "one of us" was always fanciful and was bound to be so.

If someone like Gerrard could twice consider leaving, then of course it's not surprising a player like Torres might not be loyal according to our practical definition of the word.

And you also have to consider all the things he didn't say but could have done. I bet you'll never find a definitive quote from him that compares to Suárez's comments (or Agger's of a few months ago), that can't be interpreted differently, in that more nuanced way, especially if said at any point where the team was uncompetitive for trophies (and I'm willing to take a broad definition of 'uncompetitive' given we're now in a worse position than we were for almost the whole time under Rafa).

And, cf. Polo, I think you're going too far the other way. That's not to say Suárez might not be off at some point but I do think he genuinely means what he says and we should take him at face value. I can't see a way of interpreting it differently.

Of course things can change so it's wise of you not to overinvest emotionally.

I think a lot of people hung on to the fact that Torres had "You'll Never Walk Alone" on his Atleti Captain's armband as a notion that he was a Red and he'd stay. He was never very convincing in many of his public quotes I remember. There was always speculation surrounding him after his first season and he never did enough to dampen it down.

Suarez's mentality is totally different in my opinion. Totally different nature. He comes across as a man of his word and he has said in no uncertain terms that he will stay. Apparently quite a few clubs were in for him in the Summer. I suspect that is when he decided in his own mind whether to give it a few years here or not.

Suarez is better for one simple reason: when things aren't going his way, he chases people down and tries to get the ball so he can make something happen. Torres stands on the halfway line scratching his ***** and waiting for everyone else to sort it out.

Can anyone imagine Torres in his pomp putting in a shift like Suarez did at Arsenal? To be so selfless and so disciplined? No chance. That's one of the things I love about Luis - he's one of the most gifted players in the world but there seems to be no hint of ego - he works so hard he makes Tevez look lazy. I ****ing love the guy, he's my favourite player by an absolute mile. The work rate and passion of Mascherano/Kuyt and then some, and all the ability in the world.

I also think you cannot underestimate the effect of Gerrard as one of the main reasons he was so good. Suarez doesnt need anybody.

Torres in this team over the last 2 seasons would have been ****e. Suarez playing for Liverpool instead of Torres in his prime with us would have still been very special.
