Liverpool break bank for Suárez

Liverpool are preparing to make Luis Suárez the highest-paid player in the club’s history by offering the striker a new contract that would double his wages to about £200,000 a week.

Ian Ayre, the Liverpool managing director, arrived in Spain yesterday to begin negotiations with Pere Guardiola, Suárez’s agent. Ayre has been given the go-ahead by the club’s owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), to do everything in his power to try to persuade the Uruguay forward to stay. Suárez’s present deal has 2½ years to run, but Liverpool are keen to reward him for his development into one of the most outstanding players in the world.

Suárez, who arrived at Anfield in January 2011, earns about £100,000 per week in a performance-related contract signed in August 2012. It is likely that Liverpool will need to double his salary if they want Suárez to consider extending his stay, particularly with Real Madrid’s continuing interest.

That negotiations are even taking place reflects a significant improvement in Suárez’s relationship with his employer just months after his unsuccessful attempts to force a move to Arsenal. It also highlights Liverpool’s determination to hold on to a player whose response since that acrimonious period in the summer was rewarded with the captaincy in the 5-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

One outstanding issue that lingers from that time is the contentious clause in Suárez’s contract, which both he and his agent felt allowed him to leave Liverpool in the event of a rival club offering more than £40 million to sign him.

Their interpretation of that agreement was found to be inaccurate when Arsenal had a bid of £40,000,001 turned down and both Suárez and Guardiola will seek greater clarity in any new contract as they attempt to leave the door open for a potential move to Real.

In August, Suárez gave an interview to Marca, the Spanish national newspaper, in which he admitted his longstanding desire to sign for the La Liga club. “Every player aspires to reach the top and Real Madrid is among the most important clubs in the world,” he said. “It would be very difficult to say no to Real Madrid.”

Although Real did not make an offer at the time, largely because of their world-record £85 million outlay on Gareth Bale, they have continued to monitor the form of a player who has scored 17 goals in 11 league appearances already this season and are widely believed to be preparing an offer for next summer.

Despite Real’s interest, Brendan Rodgers continues to maintain that Liverpool is “the perfect place” for Suárez. The Liverpool manager has also ruled out allowing fringe players to leave on loan next month as he considers adding Jordan Rossiter, a 16-year-old midfielder, and Brad Smith, a 19-year-old full back, to his depleted squad.

“At this moment in time we’ve got 19 fit players and that includes young Jordon Ibe and Tiago Ilori,” Rodgers said. “The squad is very thin at the moment so unless we get some of the players back fit then certainly at this moment in time I can’t even consider something like that [players leaving on loan].

“We’ve had Jordan Rossiter training with us. He’s an outstanding young talent. Brad Smith, a left back who I think is another outstanding young player, has been here too. The one thing you’ll get with kids is they’ll run through a brick wall for you so it’s something I’ll look closely at and maybe in the second half of the season they will get a chance.”

Well Kuyt currently earns €72k a week with Fenebahce (~£60k), so the total figure of those three must be tipping £250k.

Pay him £200k and a £10k goal bonus. An additional £50k to a charity of his choice for each hat trick.

Rooney is on £250k a week so this represents great value for me. FFS, we'd never find a player like him any time soon so I think this shows his value to the club.

If any other Liverpool player wants similar wages then you better play to his level EVERY game and make the difference.
