This is absolutely brilliant. I never lost hope that this is how it would turn out, but FSG, Ayre and Rodgers have been brilliant. What a great triumph for the club. Would be magic if he helped us nick 4th, get in the CL, sign the sort of players that have largely eluded us lately and keep improving.

If there's any truth in the story Arsenal are going to bid £49m then they have effectively given up.

The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Luis Suárez back in training as Liverpool seal year-long loan deal for Aly Cissokho

Luis Suárez has brokered an uneasy truce with Liverpool by pledging to give his total commitment for as long as he remains at the club, a move that has taken the sting out of his recent stand-off with Brendan Rodgers.

The saga surrounding Suárez’s future took another twist yesterday when the forward returned to training with the Liverpool first-team squad after talks with Rodgers.

Suárez stopped short of offering an apology to his manager, but he did accept that his agitation for a transfer had been detrimental to internal club harmony. Rodgers judged the improvement in the 26-year-old’s attitude sufficient to allow him to train for the first time in almost a fortnight after initially banishing him for showing “a total disrespect to the club”.

Suárez remains determined to leave if the opportunity arises and Arsenal, having had two offers rejected for the Uruguay forward, still retain an interest in him. But after all the acrimony between Suárez and his employers, the former Ajax player has at least allowed working relations to resume by restating his commitment to Liverpool.

Despite initially demanding an apology that ultimately was not forthcoming, Rodgers had come to the conclusion that he could ill afford for Suárez to continue to be such a relentless distraction, particularly with Liverpool set to begin their Barclays Premier League campaign today with a home game against Stoke City.

As such, both he and Suárez have come to an accommodation, one that will allow player and club to function even if their long-term association remains in doubt. The forward remains banned for a further six matches for biting Branislav Ivanovic, of Chelsea, last season.

While Suárez was being put through his paces at Melwood, Liverpool were involved in talks with Anzhi Makhachkala as they stepped up their bid to sign Willian, who is also attracting interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Willian has become Rodgers’s main transfer target after being made available by Anzhi, but with no Champions League football to offer the Brazil forward, Liverpool are aware that they face a battle to tempt him to Anfield.

They remain hopeful that a deal can be concluded for the 25-year-old, however, and were last night believed to be close to agreeing a fee in the region of £30 million for a player who is widely regarded as one of the most talented in Russia at present.

While negotiations continue on that transfer, Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle with Valencia in which they will sign Aly Cissokho on loan for a season with a view to a permanent £4 million move for the left back.

Cissokho’s arrival will satisfy Rodgers, who believes that he needs to add to his squad before the transfer window closes on September 2.

“We need quality,” the Liverpool manager said. “We just want to add that. We’ve obviously worked hard to try to get one or two players in and it hasn’t quite materialised.”

Missing out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the Armenia midfielder who moved to Borussia Dortmund, and Diego Costa, the Brazil striker who signed a new contract with Atlético Madrid, were damaging blows to Liverpool, who once again discovered the difficulties of attracting players while exiled from the Champions League.

The experience has been a chastening one, if not unexpected, for Rodgers, but he insists that such realities should not prevent Liverpool from setting their sights high ahead of the new campaign.

“The measure of Liverpool will always be the Champions League for the length of time I’m here and when I move on for the next manager coming in,” he said.

“I think the problem is, if you start to think about it being unfair, it’s hard to move on. I can make enough excuses, but it’s not going to solve anything. We have got to fight for our life, with our play. Play with the type of football that can maybe be different and get players in who are hungry.

“If you are in those top echelons, you can maybe attract another type of player, but I’m not going to bleat about it being unfair. I just need to get on with the job and do the best I can.”

Words change meaning over time for populations but that isn't necessarily true for individuals.

So while you may think "c*nt" doesn't have misogynistic associations, for me it does, depending on context.

I may know you don't intend it to come across that way but it still leaps into my mind every time I see or hear it used as a negative.

So you can bear that in mind and respect other people's frames of reference or not. But also remember that tolerance cuts both ways.

I never realised how offensive it was to you when I called you a scullion, rampallian and fustilarian. Lexical shift over the years changes things.
