He's more than compensated for what he offers the club as a whole, which was reflected in the bump he got only a year back. Chucking a more lucrative contract his way means very little, as he doesn't appear to be motivated by money (in a simplistic way obviously, it's still important).
Length of contract doesn't mean much to him either........he wanted out, it didn't happen despite promises that were made to him from advisers IMO and he's stuck here now till the summer (Jan is an outside bet, but still very unlikely I would say unless a fuss is made).
Tough situation he made for himself, with Rodgers coming out of it with enormous credit, smiling his new set of teeth.

I have to disagree. The Aldridge comments are those of a fan. He doesn't deserve a new deal yet. But, by giving him a new deal (probably with a certain buy-out clause) will be beneficial for us. Set it at £60m odd and we're all clear. He signs a new deal and we have a player who has longer left on his contract too

He'll be offered a new deal. I heard in the Summer he would be if he got his head down and didn't kick off and force the move

OK, so a new contract to protect the club I can understand but I don't see how he can justify a bump in his pay tbh.

I agree on the pay. I guess it really depends what's gone on behind the scenes. Has he committed to stay long term if he gets a new deal with a higher wage?

Yes, of course, we can protect ourselves with a view to a sale, but we remain in a strong enough position to call the shots, even in the summer.
Contract rumours may help stir the interest of some buying clubs, but even after his excellent season (bar the biting),and his statement of wanting to leave, we didn't exactly have to beat off the Reals, Barcas, Bayerns of this world.

Another great season will suit both parties though.

Doesn't it depend what the contract offer was, if the new contract ties him to the club for the next 2 seasons, regardless of whether we finish out of the top 4 this season, then why wouldn't we do that ?

If it's simply to pay him more for this season, and he can leave at the end of it, then no.

If we bump up his wages then fewer clubs can afford to sign him because he would never move to another club and get paid less, not a chance.

He is also our best player by some distance and should be our best paid player. Insert clauses that if he **** it up again on the pitch then the wages goes down a lot.

Its a fair point you make, I never looked at it like that.

Are you allowed to have clauses like that? Isn't there a maximum two week fine or something?

The clubs that can afford to pay him mega wages would have no problem to pay £70m+ for him.

It would almost guarantee that we get enough money if we sell him.

You can also insert clauses that if we qualify for the CL then the buy-out clause would be lower and if we miss out then it would be higher.

We would get a player that work his socks off in every game even if he want out.

Don't really have a clue but IMO it is a difference between fines and contract clauses.

Agree. We have a fully bedded in, not easily replaced world-class player. Marginal cost to keep him sweet, major benefit to have him around.

Who knows, we might be offered a swap deal next summer if Bale doesn't cut it at Real. He can't pass like Stevie but he doesn't half know where the goal is.

Thigh muscle gone bang on that lad this week....................finished.

Came on the other night against Atletico, and beyond exaggerating a challenge to win a FK, he played like a ****in' eejit.

Dunno about anyone else, but I expect the world's most expensive player to be banging in hat tricks every game.
