Luis Suarez: Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez to quit Fifa posts

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said he will resign from two Fifa posts in protest at the "excessive severity" of Luis Suarez's ban.

Tabarez said Suarez had been made a "scapegoat" following his punishment for a third biting incident.

The 67-year-old says he will leave his roles on Fifa's technical study group and strategic committee.

"Tabarez announced he would take no questions and went on, uninterrupted, to outline the injustice he and the whole of Uruguay feels has been inflicted on Luis Suarez.

"The veteran coach claimed the punishment was of 'excessive severity' and pointed the finger at the British media for pursuing the story, saying: 'I don't know what their nationality was but they all spoke English.'

"Tabarez went on to expound 'the theory of the scapegoat' before announcing his resignation from Fifa's Technical Study Group in protest at the sanctions taken against Suarez.

"He concluded his speech with a call to arms for his players to use the emotions stirred by the Suarez affair to inspire them to victory against Colombia on Saturday.

"Tabarez then rose and left the room to loud applause from admiring Uruguayan journalists - an ovation not joined by those of us in the English media."

"It isn't wise to be in an organisation with those who exerted pressure to promote this decision," he said.

Tabarez, addressing a news conference for more than 10 minutes ahead of Uruguay's last-16 encounter with Colombia at the 2014 Fifa World Cup, claimed the ban was "more focused on the opinions of the media".

He added: "We know the mistakes he's made, but there's another side to this person. The severity was excessive.

"Many times you forget that the scapegoat is a person, who has rights."

Liverpool not being punished by Suarez ban, insists Valcke

FIFA chief Jerome Valcke has claimed Liverpool are not being punished by the four-month worldwide ban imposed on Luis Suarez for biting and told the striker to seek treatment for his behaviour.

Suarez’s ban for biting an opponent while playing at the World Cup for Uruguay means he would miss 13 matches for Liverpool between the start of the season and the end of October. He is also banned for nine international games and has been fined 100,000 Swiss francs (£66,000).

Suarez’s lawyer has described the sanctions as “grotesque and absurd” and that “all that was missing was life imprisonment”.

Valcke, FIFA’s secretary general, told a news conference in Rio that the ban reflected the “unacceptable” behaviour on the world stage and that the 27-year-old should “seek treatment” as it was his third biting offence. Liverpool are taking legal advice over the case but Valcke claimed the worldwide ban was correct.

He said: “It’s not Liverpool who is punished. It’s the player who is punished.

“What happened with Suarez was far beyond the fair play and the attitude you should have when you play at the World Cup.

“When you are with the 32 teams among 23 players in each team you have to show the best of the best as they are the example for the rest of the world.

“I applaud the decision which was made by the committee to sanction the player in this way because what he did is unacceptable and not the image we want to give to the world.”

He added: “I think he should find a way to stop doing it. He should go through a treatment and find something, it is definitely wrong. It is more than one incident that’s why it is has to be exemplary.”

Suarez’s victim Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini has said the punishment was “excessive” but Valcke insisted it was proportionate.

He said: “You will always find someone who will say it is excessive – so what? They are decisions made by the disciplinary committee based on what has been seen by hundreds of millions of people. It is not what you want your kids, the little ones playing football around the world to see at the World Cup. That’s not what you do at any level of football or in life.”

The international players’ union FIFPro has questioned why Liverpool should be affected by the ban and said FIFA should have included treatment and rehabilitation as part of the sanction.

An appeal is being lodged against the decision and Suarez’s lawyer Alejandro Balbi said they would take the case all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and that he remained in constant contact with Liverpool.

Hesaid: “The ban is absolutely disproportionate considering what Luis did. Julio Grondona, vice-president of FIFA, told me that he had never seen such a serious ban handed to a player.

“This is so grotesque and absurd that the CAS will have to revoke this unjust ruling.

“Unjust not just due to the number of games, but not being able to be allowed to have any relationship with football in 120 days, and then there’s the fine.”

A child of seven faces being expelled from primary school for copying Luis Suarez’s World Cup bite attack, it was reported last night (FRIDAY).

Liverpool fan Harvey Eaglen apparently got in trouble in Lowestoft, Suffolk, after seeing the Uruguay striker try to take a chunk out of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The bite-sized youngster is said to have sunk his teeth into a classmate’s wrist as they played football in the playground.

Harvey told teachers it was “what footballers do”.

He was banned from the pitch and had his breaktimes cancelled for the rest of the day at Poplars Community School

Harvey is on his final warning, meaning he will be expelled if he gets in trouble again.

FIFA has banned Suarez, 27, from all forms of football for four months and suspended him for nine international games over the incident.

        A bit sensationalist, there's a shock...

Harvey is on his final warning - so he is a bit of a tearaway then....

That said, my wife works in a behavioural school & this week the topic of conversation between the kids within the classes has all been about Luis & his biting.

I think we're ready to move him on now. Before it was an unequivocal 'hands off' now we've put a price on him (Tony Barrett).

The Biggest Problem facing Suarez and whichever club he next plays for is this....if he steps out of line again[and he most probably will] then he will get a career ending ban,so as much as i would like to keep him,in the best interest of L.F.C it's better he moves on elsewhere.Adios Suarez

Please Liverpool, just put an end to this. Get the best deal for all concerned and move on, thanks for your contribution Mr Suarez but you're better off being somebody else's problem.
Anyway, he can't keep dragging out his Summer holidays. He gets the usual (plus Bank Holidays) like everyone else.

This is the thing concerning our owners. I love him to bits but maybe it's better for us if we take the 80mill.
