It is almost impossible to compare players from different times. Liverpool back in Kenny times had a team packed with top class players.

Suarez totally dominates now but that is also because he is our only top class player.

Suarez is probably our most valuable player ever. We depend on him more than we ever have depended on any other player.

The best, impossible to say, most valuable, yes.

I think he'll give us one more season but not more beyond that regardless if we make into CL or not next season, which is fine as long as we nicely cash in and use the money wisely to reinvest into the squad.

Luis has today appeared on Radio Sport Montevideo 890 to denounce yesterdays reports that he could leave LFC as “twisted words.”

Billy Liddel, Ronnie Moran, Gerry Byrne, Brian Labone*, Jimmy Arnfield, Eddie Gray, Jack Charlton

Theres probably many more from the lower league teams as well back then

          * bit inaccurate because Labone use to frequently turn out for the King Harry Pub Sunday League side whilst playing for Everton
But it is was always the vast minority of players who where one club players.

I remember in the late eighties / early nineties a huge fuss being made of David O'Leary staying at Arsenal for his whole career and it being a thing of the past back then, so bollocks to anyone saying it was the norm.

So many assertions in here about Suarez's future and even the club's future - like Liverpool's existence is dependent on one (admittedly excellent) footballer

None of you know anything! Its all conjecture! There is only Luis Suarez who will know what he wants to do, and his mrs - maybe his parents, brothers & sisters maybe, unless they're gob****es like my sister who can't hold her own water.

I'd like to think he'll give LFC another season and play it from there, but if the team isn't challenging or the "project" isn't working, then he'll leave. And good luck to him, he's a ****ing genius.

Sorry, but that's nonsense. Fidget, you must be about 10 if you can't recall any better players for Liverpool. One great season doesn't make him the best ever. For example, looking at the Top 50 list, you've got Beardsley at 44, presumably because he was only around for a couple of seasons. He was an absolutely brilliant player, and was with Barnes the key element in arguably the greatest footballing side in English football history.

Arn, on the one hand you say that you can't compare players from different eras, and then do exactly that by saying that Luis is more valuable to the team than any other player ever has been. So the fact that he's had one great season in a team that has won nothing makes him more valuable to the team than Gerrard was for several years, during which time we won the CL and FA Cup, or McManaman was before Gerrard? Sorry, but in your own words, you can't compare different eras.

Amazingly this seems to have been missed by the news websites and perhaps the odd EST poster.

I think it's because a few posters may have forgot to tune in to Radio Sport 890 Uruguay.

I don't share his view but to be fair to Arn he's not comparing individuals across different eras but weighing up an individual's contribution to the team he's playing in.

So effectively he's (implicitly) quantifying the relative contribution of, for example, Suárez and Dalglish and then seeing which one has the higher score. So it's not a direct comparison between the two in terms of who was the better player but who was more important to their team.

FWIW I'd argue the implied statistics are totally artificial and I think he's overlooking a few things (as ever!) but even so it's an interesting and, in principle, valid approach and not at all inconsistent with his earlier statement in the way that you suggest.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Until you come back with a coefficient that you've calculated that allows us to accurately compare the relative contribution of players from different decades playing in different teams and different competitions, I have nothing to say to you.
