Sorry, but that isn't a Liverpool that I, or I would imagine many other fans, want to see. We're not Stoke, and Joey Barton isn't some kind of role model. Suarez's behaviour is why, for me, I can't view him in the same light as the Liverpool greats. He crosses the line from passion into idiocy too often, and allows it to overshadow his prodigious talent. He's becoming a bit of a pantomime villain, and every time we defend him and say it's out of character we look a bit more foolish because he goes and does something else.

At some point he has to grow up, take responsibility for his actions and his role in the team and stop acting like a bit of a tit.

And as for the press, aside from whether their opinion is remotely relevant (it's not imo*), they have largely been praising him for his performances this season. Sure, when he's done something which is outside the rules of the game, it's been highlighted. But he's made a rod for his own back there. Deal with it.

I just don't get all bleating about this.

    * My opinion is just as relevant as everybody else's, be it on here or elsewhere. i.e. it is utterly irrelevent.
    Bang on.

Must admit I don't agree with James and am not arsed about Suarez's so-called antics (by the same token I don't really buy that Liverpool FC has a unique and saintly code of conduct on the pitch). He's just a South American footballer. Most are like him in some way. I think we in Britain have an irritatingly sanctimonious view on 'how football should be played'. If we had 11 players who had Suarez's attitude - never mind his talent - we'd win the league. I ****ing love the guy and I won't be mounting the high horse about his 'behaviour'. I wish they were all like him.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I just take him for what he is and I'll just carry on enjoying watching him as long as he's here. We've got one of the games biggest characters and he actually makes us worth watching despite the mediocre results.

James said earlier that the fact that Luis doesn't get injured was a silly reason to cite for him being a great player but now includes adherence to some arbitrary code of conduct that he presumably didn't apply to Mr Souness.
I'll say it again - we may well have had several as good but I can't say we've had any better.

If we had 2 more players as good (and mental) as Suarez let alone 11, we'd win the league. Besides, weren't some of the guys from the 70's/ 80's more mental than him? I'm referring to Souness and Tommy Smith

The moralising about Suarez is truly laugable when you consider the stuff those 2 (and many others) got up in the "good old days".

Here's a bit on Souey from the official website:

"In the semi-final second leg against Dinamo Bucharest, Souey was targeted by the Romanian crowd following an incident in the first leg that left a Dinamo player with a broken jaw. But, with every boo, whistle and jeer, the Reds skipper grew in stature and orchestrated proceedings as a place in the final was memorably secured."

I don't recall that Souness ever punched anyone, or bit anyone, or headbutted anyone? Playing with controlled aggression is one thing. Allowing the red mist to descend while on the pitch is another. Just because he's talented doesn't excuse behaving like a dick.

This is all about opinions. It's up to you if you think that Suarez is the best player we've ever had, and it's up to me I'd I think that he's not even in the top 5. Debate is fine. But if some of your reasoning is pretty spurious (namely the point about injuries, which has nothing to do with how great a player is) then someone is entitled to point that out. The trick is not to take it personally, because it's just two complete strangers having a debate on the Internet.

I'd rather have someone throw a punch at me like Suarez did than some of those thuggish excuses for tackles that were banded around in Souness' day.

But this is something of a pointless debate. It isn't the 70s or 80s any more, so players now have to adhere to the different codes of conduct. Players got away with some truly dubious behaviour back then. They can't now. And we're not talking about a robust challenge, we're talking about throwing a punch.
