World Cup 2014: Luis Suarez doing 'triple shifts' for Uruguay

Striker Luis Suarez is working overtime to be fit for the World Cup as he recovers from knee surgery, says Uruguay team-mate Cristian Rodriguez.

Uruguay open their Group D campaign against Costa Rica on Saturday, and coach Oscar Tabarez does not know when the Liverpool player will be available.

But winger Rodriguez said Suarez, 27, is doing all he can to return quickly.

"He is very focused. He is working in double and triple shifts and we hope to have him with us soon," he said.

Suarez had keyhole surgery to repair meniscus damage in his left knee on 22 May.
After facing Costa Rica, Uruguay meet England on 19 June, before completing their group games against Italy five days later.

Tabarez said Suarez is "responding very well" to his training programme and is in good spirits.

He added: "As we have no set deadlines, I don't know if we'll have him for the first match, for the second, for the third.

"If it were up to me, Suarez would play tomorrow."

Just hope they don't rush him back.....

Luis Suarez is the world's best striker insists Diego Maradona ahead of World Cup kick-off

                    Jun 11, 2014 11:44 By Ed Malyon

The Argentine icon is backing the Liverpool man to put any injury troubles behind him and star in this summer's tournament

Diego Maradona has labelled Liverpool and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez the "best striker in the world" ahead of the World Cup, writes Ed Malyon in Brazil.

But the 1986 World Cup-winning star didn't stop there, also claiming that the Reds frontman "was going to smash it," at this summer's tournament in Brazil before commenting that Suarez had "two really big balls."

Maradona's thoughts on Suarez came during an appearance on a televised World Cup special with broadcaster Victor Hugo, the commentator who provided the famous backing to Maradona's second goal against England at Mexico 86.

Suarez scored 31 Premier League goals last season and provided 12 assists as Liverpool finished runners up but is a doubt for Uruguay's World Cup opener after an operation on his knee.

The 27-year-old returned to training with the Celeste at their Sete Lagoas training base yesterday.
