That's a common misconception I think. Obviously it would be better if we did make the top four. Obviously it would be a concern if we didn't. Obviously each year out makes it a bit harder to get back in. But is finishing outside an "alarming" prospect? Does it usher in terminal decline? I don't think so.Originally posted by Tee View PostWell I fear that if we don't make the top 4 this year it could well be the start of a terminal decline. Pepe and Suarez would leave IMO, Gerrard and Carra are not the force they once were. Things could quite easily go pear shaped.
Only saving graces in that worst case scenario would be another massive transfer budget from FSG (which I think is extremely unlikely) or the likes of Pepe and Suarez showing loyalty....
It is imperative that we finish top 4 this season and build on what we have, not start another rebuild job next season.
To me it just means the owners would have to refine their strategy. I very much doubt that their strategy and indeed their whole commitment to the club relies on a single season of success or failure. I also disagree with the alarmist thinking that another rebuilding job immediately follows. We need to be thinking longer term than one season. I think the club hierarchy is, simply because it's good business strategy and they're good at business. Perhaps as supporters we need to follow their lead.
The real threat to the long term success of Liverpool FC isn't Spurs or Arsenal or Chelsea or even the two Manchester clubs, it's the relative economic decline of the city and its hinterland..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

It would be a rebuild if we failed to make the top 4. Why? Because it would probably mean the end for Kenny, the end for Pepe and Suarez. And as I said before, the old guard are not the force they were and we have some average players still on very good contracts.
Sure the owners may be thinking long term, but these short term goals are absolutely vital to their long term hopes at Liverpool. Underestimate the cost of missing out on another CL at your peril. Just my take on it."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

I think that's where we fans play a part. Either we give the manager and board time to get it right or we judge that Dalglish needs to go. That's why I'm even bothering to get involved in the lamentable KIWWN thread.
I don't disagree with your line of thought, it's just that I think your conclusions are unnecessarily melodramatic. This time last year we were really looking down the barrel. With this manager and these owners, I don't think that applies, even if we finish outside the CL places..

I thought we would be doing better. The "Alarming" is directed at our failure to convert the numerous chances we create each gameOriginally posted by Neil Young View PostYou're kidding.
It's perhaps a little underwhelming but we're hardly on the edge of disaster.
Unless you believe the fanciful idea that if we don't make the top four this season then we never will again and are doomed to end up like the once great Huddersfield Town.
