    Stevie: The spark is back

STEVEN GERRARD believes the 'spark' has returned to his game after admitting he'd not been producing the goods earlier in the season.

The skipper was relieved to claim his first of the campaign in the 3-0 win over Bordeaux, as Liverpool secured their last 16 Champions League place.

And now Gerrard senses a definite shift in momentum as the Reds seek to maintain their winning streak.

"It was a weight off my mind to get the goal," he said.

"I had a few chances before and you could see I was getting too anxious. But I just had a feeling it was going to come last night.

"My form has been a lot better in training and I knew it was just a matter of time before I took it onto the pitch.

"The most important thing for me is always going to be the team, but I know if I'm playing to my best I can have a big influence on our form.

"I've been missing something since the start of the season. I've not had the spark to my game, and I definitelythink coming back from the World Cup has been a factor.

"It's more to do with missing pre-season. You're never as sharp if you don't get the full pre-season training, and it's no coincidence as far as I'm concerned that if you look around Europe a lot of the major players haven't started the season that well."

After the disappointing Premiership defeat to Manchester United on October 22, Gerrard felt it was essential the players responded.

With three wins, and ten goals, he's confident the side is starting to move into a higher gear.

"When we were on the bus home from Old Trafford, we were all down," he said.

"We knew we'd let ourselves and the club down and we got together as a group and said to ourselves there had to be a strong reaction.

"I think in the last few games you've seen that, and now it's important to keep that going."

The smile has now returned to Gerrard's face, and he couldn't resist an extra swipe at the ongoing obsession with how 'happy' he is at Anfield.

"What gets me down is losing games and hearing so much rubbish about me," he said.

"I could go on for several paragraphs about what was written last weekend, but I think in this case I summed it up well enough in one sentence on Monday.

"We're all a bit sick of reading the same things. I'm sick of it, the players are, the fans and the manager is.

"I feel really sorry for the fans that they have to see the focus put on me again in those stories, but what can I do about it?

"I think from the reaction of the supporters last night, it's clear to me they're not taking any notice of that stuff any more and that's exactly how I want it to be."

Gerrard will now show best form says boss

      Nov 1 2006

      By Paul Walker, Liverpool Echo

RAFAEL BENITEZ has told his skipper Steven Gerrard to seize the moment and re-kindle his best form.

Gerrard finally grabbed his first goal of the campaign with the second in Liverpool's 3-0 Champions League victory over Bordeaux at Anfield last night.

The victory sends them into the next stage with two Group C matches still to play, and they can clinch top spot when PSV Eindhoven go to Anfield.

But it was Gerrard's display that pleased boss Benitez most after Luis Garcia had taken his Champions League tally for the Merseysiders to 10 goals with his double against the French side, who had Brazilian defender Fernando Menegazzo sent off in the second half with the game finely poised at 1-0 to Liverpool.

Benitez said: "Steven has been searching for that goal. When you have scored 23 one season and it takes a long time in the next campaign to get off the mark, then you do get worried.

"But he has been playing well and this goal will give him confidence to go on and re-claim his best form now. I believe he will be a lot calmer now."

Benitez was also delighted that his side have now qualified for the knockout stages with two group games to spare.

He said: "This is important for us, and it gives us the chance now to go on and win the group in our next match here against PSV. Then we can maybe make changes for the last game and give young players European experience."

On the red card for Fernando, Benitez said: "It was a headbutt and you could see the blood. You do not like to see things like that on the pitch - you prefer to talk about good football."

Bordeaux coach Ricardo Gomes blamed the red card for his side's demise.

He said: "The sending off was the turning point. We were disappointed that Liverpool raced away from a throw and did not give the ball back to us after a stoppage. That was not fair play.

"But it was an incident that you cannot condone. In the end it gave Liverpool the extra man and the incentive to go on and win the game.

"Before-hand, we certainly had a chance of an equal-iser." DELIGHTED: Reds manager Rafa Benitez

In an odd sort of way the defeat against Man Utd has given us the kick up the arse we needed. Still would have rather we had taken great confidence from a victory obviously but sometimes you just have to look at the positives in the bigger picture.

Three wins on the spin, really need to pick up three points on Saturday and beat Birmingham in the league Cup before Arsenal away though, we'll need a lot of confidence going in to that one.

Play like we did against Aston Villa and yes we can get back in the title hunt. However we have to start taking points off Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manure. Win our home games against them and we'll be mixing it at the top, otherwise it'll be 3rd or 4th at best.

Agree with that - but don't forget that the three of them will all take points off each other too.

I do, it's mathematically possible, so until proven otherwise I believe.

Reds star Gerrard scores with his head!

                              Nov 2 2006

                              Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard has picked up a new nickname: Tufty.

Gerrard, who was formerly known by friends as "Titch", for being the smallest member of his class at West Derby school Cardinal Heenan, has now outgrown the label.

Friends of the 6ft 2in soccer star have given him the Tufty tag because of the brushed-up fringe that he has started sporting.

Team-mates reckon it makes him look like the famous children's icon Tufty the road safety squirrel.

Tufty was a household name in the 1960s and 70s when he was the character in Ministry of Transport films about traffic safety, aimed at children who joined The Tufty Club.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: "We are delighted Steven has picked up this nickname.

"It might even persuade some children to find out more about Tufty and road safety."
