MacManaman carried that team for years, but got precious little thanks from it from the supporters who were all too happy to give him stick for "only" getting 12 goals a season. Brilliant player and was deeply under-appreciated in my view.

I think overall it is more a case that we simply were not good enough as a team to win the league back then.

Our best scoring season in the Prem was 77 in 08/09.
I think you're right and we do probably go OTT about how good the team was in attack.

All the same there's a saying in American football (I think) that 'offence wins matches and defense wins championships'. Your stats there might back that up for football.

Although I've long thought it true so might be biased.

And by the way I ended up f*cking hating our mid-Nineties team for their inept defending and general lack of professionalism.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

true, but you could argue that James flapped for alot of crosses and corners because he didn't have a commanding defence in front of him that could deal with them. If he'd had someone like Sami in there he would probably have stayed on his line more...
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Not convinced by that. He proved elsewhere over several years he was an unreliable keeper.

James, Ruddock, McAteer, Matteo were clowns.

Babb and Harkness etc just weren't at our required level.

Say what you like about the professionalism of Fowler and McManaman, but at least they performed on the pitch.

McManaman was my favourite player at the time and when he left I was gutted. I must have been 14 when he went. Ive got 4 or 5 shirts at home with his name on. Still be one of my all times faves though.

yeah? no old boy, can't say I have had the misfortune.

I think both were decent players though.
