Exclusive: Liverpool FC boss Kenny Dalglish on Reds’ pre-season tour

KENNY DALGLISH has a message for the players in his squad embarking on their first trip to the Far East: “Prepare to be amazed.”

Liverpool fly to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou tomorrow as they kick off an eight-day pre-season tour.

They will play Guangdong Sunray Cave at the Tianhe Stadium on Wednesday (1pm UK time) before moving on to Kuala Lumpur to face a Malaysian XI at the Bukit Jalil Stadium next Saturday (10.45am).

An open training session in Singapore the following day will bring the curtain down on their latest Asian adventure.

Dalglish knows what awaits them having been part of Liverpool’s hugely successful tour of Thailand and Singapore two years ago.

In his role as a club ambassador the Kop legend saw first hand the fanatical support the Reds enjoy across the continent.

The reception that greeted them made Beatlemania look relatively restrained with legions of fans camped outside the team hotel 24 hours a day.

Thousands packed into shopping centres for the chance to catch a glimpse of players at promotional events and both games on the tour attracted bumper crowds of 50,000.

Similar scenes can be expected over the next week. Liverpool have an estimated 60 million fans in China and Dalglish is looking forward to getting out there.

“It really is unbelievable the support the club has in that part of the world,” he said.

“I was on the tour two years ago and the passion for Liverpool was incredible.

“We have a huge following in Asia and until you get out there you don’t appreciate the magnitude of it.

“We had two sell-out crowds in Bangkok and Singapore. Those who haven’t been before will be amazed. The figures we’re talking about are astronomical.

“I’ve never been to China or Malaysia before so it should be a great experience for everyone involved.”

Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool FC managerIt will be the first time Liverpool have played pre-season games in mainland China or Malaysia.

There are obvious commercial benefits to embarking on the tour with the Reds keen to build on the profile they enjoy across the region.

However, Dalglish believes the club also has a duty to play in front of dedicated fans who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to see their heroes in the flesh.

“I think it’s really important that we make the effort to go there,” he said.

“Many of them aren’t in a position to come over here to watch the team play so it’s important we go there when we can and play matches.

“This is our chance to go there, thank them for their support and let them see the club in close proximity.

“We can’t satisfy everyone’s needs and we can’t play games everywhere but we should go when we can.

“This is a great opportunity for us. The support we get over there is greatly appreciated and respected.”

As well as a gruelling 14,000-mile round trip, Liverpool will have to contend with searing heat.

It will be around 34 degrees in Guangzhou where humidity is around 80% and with the monsoon season in full flow torrential downpours are expected.

Malaysia also promises to be sticky work with temperatures of around 30 degrees and 70% humidity.

But Liverpool exactly know what they are letting themselves in for.

Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool FC manager“A lot of preparation has gone into the trip,” Dalglish said. “We’ll do our best to cope with the conditions. We’ll do our training to suit the weather and it won’t be a problem. We will have a big squad going and there will be plenty of opportunities for players to play.

“The advantages of going on this tour by far outweigh the disadvantages.”

Skipper Steven Gerrard won’t travel as he continues his rehabilitation at Melwood following groin surgery.

Jordan Henderson is another absentee as he’s been given extra time to recover from his exploits with England Under-21s at the European Championships.

Lucas Leiva and Luis Suarez are on duty at the Copa America but all other first team stars are expected to board the flight for China, including new signing Charlie Adam.

Argentine duo Maxi Rodriguez and Emiliano Insua returned to Melwood on Wednesday, while Pepe Reina and Dirk Kuyt both reported back as planned 24 hours later.

Dalglish has been delighted with the work done at Melwood this week and has praised his players for sticking to the fitness programmes they were given over the summer.

“Training has been great and they all look very fit,” he said. “The condition the players came back in was very commendable. It’s clear they have all looked after themselves during the break. The start of pre-season is an exciting time and everyone’s eager to get going.”
