    Reserves Celebrate First Win

    RESERVES CELEBRATE FIRST WIN

    Steve Hunter 01 November 2006

Goals from Paul Anderson and Besian Idrizaj gave Gary Ablett his first win in charge of Liverpool reserves as the Reds won 2-0 at Wigan on Wednesday evening.

It was a thoroughly deserved victory as Liverpool played some enterprising pass and move football to warm up the crowd on a freezing night at Robins Park Arena.

David Mannix and Danny Guthrie laid the foundations for victory with some eye catching displays in midfield while Idrizaj was a lively figure in attack.

After Guthrie had gone close with an audacious chip, Liverpool opened the scoring after 33 minutes. Craig Lindfield released Idrizaj down the left side and the Austrian under-21 international deceived two defenders before laying the ball back to Anderson whose finish was clinical, giving Russell Saunders no chance in the Wigan goal.

Liverpool sealed the three points six minutes after the restart when Idrizaj scored a deserved second goal. Again Lindfield was the provider with a precise pass and the Austrian powered his way into the penalty area to score at the second attempt after Saunders had saved his first effort.

Such was their dominance, the Reds might have added to their lead but a combination of good goalkeeping and near misses ensured it remained 2-0.

After losing his first four games in charge of Liverpool's second string, Ablett will have been delighted with the manner of his side's performance.

About time, our youth and reserve results have been abysmal

Let's hope it's turnaround time for us on all fronts.

Someone said earlier that when Xabia and Luis play well, we win. I reckon when the reserves play well we tend to go on a good run, like last year. All the signs are in place that we are moving towards a purple patch of form

Glad to read of the conttinuing improvement of Idrizaj. I've a feeling he may be a first-teamer in a couple of years.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

Is Idrizaj still playing up front for us?

Yes - but he is profligate and sometimes lumbering. Seems to have improved this season over last but I don't have Mersey86's confidence that he'll make it (but I'd be pleased to be proved wrong).

Craig is a much better finisher but is too slow to make it in the prem I think - he also seems a clever player with a good touch.

I thought Nabil El Zahir (sp) would be getting more time up front and I was hoping for him to shine, but he seems to play attacking midfield.
Luck - the only substitute for skill
