LADIES REPORT: CHELSEA 0 LIVERPOOL 1
Posted on: Mon 08 Aug 2011
Chelsea Ladies lost to Liverpool at home this weekend and gifted the travelling side their first three points of the campaign.
It was a closely contested match, which saw Liverpool steal the lead after 24 minutes following confusion in front of the Chelsea goal.
But the afternoon can be remembered for two strong performances between the posts for both side's goalkeepers, as Danni Gibbons continuously denied Chelsea an equaliser while Carly Telford kept the deficit to one at the other end.
The visitors went ahead when a corner ball caused a scramble in the area. Liverpool's Chloe Jones looked to get the final touch on the ball after Chelsea's defence floundered and failed to clear.
Despite being 1-0 down, Chelsea refused to change the game plan and continued to play controlled balls out from the back. It was a tactic that nearly cost the side a second goal when Cheryl Foster stole possession and looked destined to score before the linesman flagged for offside.
That meant Liverpool went into the break 1-0 up and Matt Beard made no changes to his Chelsea side before the second-half got underway.
The Blues' best chance of an equaliser came deep in the second half, when Ashlee Hincks broke into the box with only Gibbons to beat. But an acrobatic save saw the Liverpool shot-stopper block Hincks' effort with her outstretched legs.
Chelsea continued the search for an equaliser but when a cross from the left was met by Hincks, Gibbons once again denied the Chelsea striker.
Danni Buet and Hincks continued to interchange passes and test Liverpool's defence while Chelsea's back-four were rigid under the orders of captain Kylie Davies. Then, Laura Coombs hit a volley 25 yards out from goal, which Gibbons once again did well to save.
Despite Chelsea's second-half pressure and numerous attempts on goal, the game ended 1-0 to Liverpool. The loss means Chelsea sit fourth in the table with 15 points from 11 games.

Unused subs: Sarah Quantrill, Shelby Hills,
Liverpool: Gibbons; Chappell, V Jones, Twohig, Brusekk; Foster, Jones, Harding, Shepherd, C Jones (Bailey 75), E Jones
