Degen made his competitive Liverpool debut in the third round of the Football League Cup in the 2–1 home win against Crewe Alexandra, during which he broke two of his ribs and punctured his lung in a collision with team-mate Sami Hyypiä and was out for two months.
On Wednesday, 12 November 2008 he made his first-team comeback in the 4–2 Carling Cup defeat at Spurs, only to suffer a broken metatarsal.
It wasn't a bad challenge from Gareth Bale but it was clear penalty which the referee never gave. I remember an interview a few weeks after that game where Degen was practically crying about the injuries he was suffering - it went something like "I must have done something wrong in a previous life. The referee didn't even give a penalty and now my foot is broken "
I don't particularly *hate* Degen, I mean I'm glad he's gone, but the way he played always made me think we'd taken a fan stood on the Kop and told him to get his kit on as he's playing.
A fan who'd never played football.
He was just a bit Kamikaze, overly excitable and didn't have the first clue what to do when he had control of the ball, he kinda just ... well, *ran*. And as mentioned above by Liverpel, he even ran in to his own players, more than likely with his head down.
