    Liverpool/Newcastle , That Game...A Replay.

Liverpool and Newcastle recreate 4-3 epic from 1996 - but Toon blow it again.

Alan Shearer rolled back the years over the weekend to pull on Newcastle's famous number 9 shirt and recreate the famous 1996 game against Liverpool.

Both clubs met at Kingston Park, the home of Newcastle Falcons, to re-enact the famous 4-3 match at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan taking charge of the Magpies again.
Alan Shearer Alan Shearer dusted off his boots to re-enact the famous 4-3 game between Newcastle and Liverpool (PA)

The match was held to raise funds for the NSPCC, CHUF, Alan Shearer Centre, Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and NE Children's Charity Pathways.

Shearer was joined by a number of old Newcastle heroes, including Faustino Asprilla, Philippe Albert, Keith Gillespie, David Ginola, John Beresford and Lee Clark.

But, as in 1996, the Newcastle side failed to overcome the Liverpool team, which included Steve McManaman, Jason McAteer, Don Hutchison, Bruce Grobbelaar, Patrick Berger, Ian Rush, Michael Thomas and Neale McDermott.

Newcastle opened the scoring thanks to Steve Watson, but McManaman quickly equalised and Liverpool stepped up a gear to take a 3-1 lead.

Shearer had an opportunity to get Newcastle back into the game from the spot, but unusually for the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer, he failed to take the chance.

The Liverpool side managed by Phil Thompson then scored a spot-kick of their own to wrap up a 4-1 victory.

Daddy must be called Terry. That's the only explanation I can find

My memory might be fading but was Michael Thomas playing for us in 96?
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

He was at the club then, but I don't know if he played in that game.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

If my memory serves he didn't play. It was Barnes, Redknapp & McManaman in midfield with Collymore & Fowler up top and a 5 man defence of McAteer, Harkness, Scales, Babb & Wright...
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

Rush played too. Did he start or did he come on?
