Rafa's got a big decision to make next summer.

I've always maintained Carson is potentially better than Reina.

Carson's not going to be happy spending next season on the bench after playing Premiership football week in, week out this season.

My guess is one of them will be sold. It would be nice to be able to sell a good player because he isn`t needed.

I really want Carson to do well for us, he's one of my favourite players, but i can't see Rafa dropping Reina, not matter how bad his form is, he just seems to me like he's one of his 'favourites'. Still Pepe's not a bad player to have as a keeper at all.

The thing is the skills needed in a team like Charlton who give away a lot of chances are quite different to those required at a top club. He will improve his shot stopping and communication without doubt by playing in a first team anywhere but at a big team (especially with a defence as good as ours was last season) it is all about concentration and being able to pull off saves after long periods of inactivity.

Ideally I would like to see Carson loaned out again next season to a team higher up the division or at least with a more settled and well organised defence. Then if he does well we will have a genuine choice between him and Reina, with both having reasonable levels of first team experience.

Football Manager 2007 certainly thinks so

Had a really good game today against watford!!! I think he would really push Reina for a starting spot in the first team.

Not in my game it doesn't. Reina is the best keeper in the world!

It's a lot easier for Carson to shine though.

He's playing for a side who are bottom of the table and Carson is a very busy fella week in, week out.

If Reina played for Charlton I dare say fans and pundits alike would be absolutely raving about him.

There's no doubt he's playing well, as he did for Wednesday last season (where, yet again, he was a very very busy custodian), but I wouldn't go jumping to any conclusions just yet.

                        I reckon Carson's a better keeper.

                        Next season should be interesting.

Iain Dowie admits that he is worried that Liverpool may recall goalkeeper Scott Carson from his loan spell at the Valley.

With Jerzy Dudek currently suspended and Chris Kirkland having been sold, untried David Martin has been on the Liverpool’s bench in recent games, which could see Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez bringing Carson back.

The England U21 international joined Charlton from the Anfield in the summer in a season long loan move, but the deal also contained a clause that states that Liverpool can recall him in January if they so wish.

“We are just going to have to hope that a call from Rafa (Benitez) doesn't come,” admitted Dowie.

“Scott has been absolutely super and we are delighted Liverpool have given us the licence to take him, but it benefits both parties in that Scott is developing all the time, working and also learning from Premiership experience.

“Liverpool have (Jose) Reina as their number one and we hope we don't get that call but, obviously, we can't affect that.”

Carson for his part says that he is enjoying his time at the Valley and that he is happy to stay, although he also admitted his is ready to move back to Anfield if required.

“I am enjoying it and learning all the time but if I am told to go back to Liverpool then that is what I must do,” he said.

“At the same time though, I want to help Charlton up the table and I'm glad if my saves can do that.”

I remain to be convinced about Carson. He does not command his area (or hasn't done when playing for Liverpool).

Have to say I agree. He's not convinced me in the few appearances he's made for us.

It's pretty hard for a keeper who knows he only has a few games to impress and on top of that has little first team experience. This is the main reason I would advocate giving him another season on loan after this one (and definitely leave him on loan unless Dudek gets injured - I presume we can't take Carson back until the transfer window anyway so Dudeks suspension plays no part in the decision).
