it is true that we don't decide, its the butterfly flapping his wings on the other side of the world creating all manner of cause and effect.
I have a further point about the death of romanticism in football allied to the increasing interest in Supporter debate about balance sheets and owners of sporting institutions, when finishing 4th to gain entry to a competition which is extremely difficult to win is valued higher than winning trophies with equal heritage. Not that I blame supporters for this it is the nature if the beast football has become. I just find it kind of sad that the childhood memoriesI have of the club triumphing at Wembley have become devalued by the money available in the Champions League. Which is why I am making a stand. I hope at the very least we win a cup this season and have something to celebrate, and a nice day out. Looks like I may be on my own.
You can be a romantic or you can be a rationalist about it. Or indeed a mixture of both. It's a matter of personal taste and outlook really, I'm not convinced one is better than the other in any objective sense.
Neither is worth worrying about really since (a) it's out of our hands (I was being satirical earlier but it's still a relevant point) and (b) it's not as if the club is in immediate danger of turning into Everton without another season of success, however you define it..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

I'd prefer to say a trophy. But the way the game has gone means Champions League football is a must if we are to afford and attract top players to push on an challenge for the league. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I'm happy with progress and to me that means being in with a shout for fourth and competing for trophies. 'Winning' either would be a nice extra but I agree, Champions League football is more important to maintain the club's upward trajectory..

4th place for me no question.
Aye, it's sad that the domestic cups have become so devalued, but it's been like that for some time. We really need to get back onto the plateau we should be on & then climb up from a position of strength. There'll be plenty of opportunity for silverware from then, but we need the lure & cash of the CL to compete for the top players we need to mount a proper challenge for the league & CL again.3rd place. Worst champions ever.

We do but as you say the game has changed in recent years. In the old days any team in the league could challenge for the title, even one who had just been promoted. Now the team that wins the league needs to have been able to attract top class players and they need to be in the Champions League to do that.Originally posted by rcasemore View Postit does of course & I'd probably choose the top 4 but don't we exist to win trophies?
Seems the money involved these days has taken us away from that being the most important thing
The money involved means that winning a trophy is much less financially rewarding than qualifying for the CL, and money is now everything in football. Champions League qualification is an indicator that your club is doing well and the best players want to be at clubs that are doing well. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Also to stop other clubs moving further ahead too, Spurs will invest after another top 4 finish, on top of what they would spend, they'll have money for Modric, who'll then improve either Chavski, Citeh Or Scum by signing for them, Spurs will miss Modric..but they'll have a big big budget to soften the blow.Originally posted by Neil Young View PostI'm happy with progress and to me that means being in with a shout for fourth and competing for trophies. What i mean is... attracting the best players has a lot to do with playing Champions league football, Spurs won't make the mistake we did when we failed to invest at the perfect time.
So it's imperative we get back into the top 4, but, that will be very difficult to do.Last edited by Vermilion; 29-12-11, 01:55 PM.
